Next season the stats can include fumbles lost, defensive yards allowed(both pass and rush), and punts forced(which would replace tfl and sacks in the calculations). I might even add in conversion rates for third and fourth down, but it likely wouldn't make it in the calculation. The reason I must wait until next season is because then I can compile the stats direct from each game as they happen. A much more manageable feat than trying to do it now. Even with a better set of stats. This will always have shortcomings. The biggest of which is that it does not include any schedule or matchup information in its calculations. |

For the record, if anyone wants to calculate an approximation of their first downs, I've come up with an approximation that seems to work pretty well for a single game. Don't ask how I came up with it.
# First Downs = (Off Total Yards / 2)^(2/3) - ( # Punts * 1.5) I took this formula and added an estimated first downs column in the punts section. It is not currently affecting the rankings, but I wouldn't mind your opinions if this approximation produces good results. |
