I've always loved watching those old geezers play petanque whenever I went to the south of France. Typical game goes like this:
- First a small pig is thrown onto the pitch - Player throws a ball, then all players en their entourage go to look where it lands and discuss how to play the next ball for 5 minutes. - Player throws a ball, then all players en their entourage go to look where it lands and discuss how to play the next ball for 10 minutes. - Player throws a ball, then all players en their entourage go to look where it lands and discuss how to play the next ball for 15 minutes. - Player throws a ball, then all players en their entourage go to look where it lands, and discuss how to play the next ball for 20 minutes. - This gets repeated until a winner of the discussion and therefore the game is declared. They then discuss for 30 minutes what all the other players did wrong during the game. It's more a debating match than anything else

you forgot the debate about if the piglett was throwned to a regular distance.  |

You forget that a proper game is usually played with some drinks leading to the last discussions during 20 seconds tops and finishing with a « f*ck it I am going for it ». The last game i played with Bro actualy finished prety bad.

Definitely a game like Pétanque needs to have a proper support of liquids. Otherwise it would be called “boccia” or “bocce”. Hello to your grandfather from the South if France.

And the olds ones are the best for liquids support.
I remember a time in south of France, on the little "place du village", an old guy coming with a box in wood on wheels and a rake. First he cleans the place with his rake, then open the box to let appear a board for keeping track of the score, a set of glasses, a bottle of water and a bottle of pastis. This along two little chairs. So perfect. As soon as I am living near a pétanque field I am getting one of this. |
