They had a report on the news here yesterday about small businesses - - mostly in the UK and Germany struggling with skyrocking electrical and gas bills. Some cafe and pub owners energy bills going up by 4x and them having to stutter.

IMO there is a lot of "making my point" in such things. We had some reports with trippling energy prices as well, and after review the picture clears quite dramatically down to factor 1.2 or 1.5. At the same time govts are discussing how to help people in risk of being able to pay their bills.
There were some more dramatic cases, where energy brokers went bankrupt. But at least in Germany the local supplier of your city has to provide you with gas and energy using their regular pricing list. If your prices get pushed through the roof by your provider, you can always ditch the contract, by law. Too much drama in those reports, this is my summary. |

I have to disagree on the gas prices, Pete,
Triple prices compared to last year will be the norm I had a gas contract with a smaller company, they had not much value add just buying and selling (and probably also greenwashing) so they filed for bankruptcy and my supply was moved to the standard supplier. In the first 2 months those bastards scalped me, but the were forced by law to use market prices (they lowered their energy price by 50% which got my attention) I was immediately trying to find a cheaper supplier, but failed, so it is market price. Bottom of the line, my downpayments tripled and their prediction of my consumption seems to be accurate by my past consumption. And just this week, I got a nice letter from them with a price increase, so its not over yet. However, monthly payment for a 4 person house rose from 100€ to 300€ so if that amount drives your business to the ropes, than you should think about getting out of business... If you have a gas contract at a more robust supplier than my company, it is a good bet that the price increase has just not yet reached you |

my words were based on the knowledge, that most of my freinds / colleagues / know realtives are not using the super duper cheapos from verivox and co, but were using their local suppliers. And yes, most of them have long term contracts (usually 1 year), and some of them faced the price increase, others did not. But those who received their letters, were in the range I was describing. And of course it makes not much sense to compare price increases from 1 year ago sold by companies not exisiting anymore, against the more healthy working local suppliers. You would have to compare local supplier from 1 year agao vs now.

I would assume that the price increases that your friends got were either max allowable price increases within a contract duration or very early 2022 new contracts but hey my local company will pay world market price when purchasing but charge me less, because I am such a nice guy I got scared when I look at todays gas price and I am pretty sure that some Russian guy will continue to play some games during winter in order to create some social chatter.... |

I believe the gas prices will face some kind of a maximum allowed charge, at least for the basic consumption per head. And I believe with every little step that "gamer" in Moscow is doing, we will become more independent from his energy supply. But we will see. At the point where heating rooms with electrical energy becomes cheaper than doing it with gas, the whole price model will collapse. Will we see the pricing levels from before the war? Probably not. But will we see AVERAGE prices 3 or 4 times as high as in February? No.

And where should that extra electrical energy suddenly magically apear? Our reserve capacity are Gas fired Plants  so prices for electrical energy would quickly match. We are still dependent on thermal power plants |
