If you win a game you should be happy. However, I don't feel totally happy. I have played a game against a new team who did not punt on 4th down but went for it every time. What caused my unhappiness is that they succeeded 8 times out of 15. Success on 4th and 2, 4-1, 4-29, 4-10, 4-19, 4-12, 4-19, 4-5.

Now I am not unhappy with or critical of the team. What I would have liked to have done after this game is messaged the manager suggesting that he set his playbook to punt on 4th down, possibly with a few exceptions. However, I feel that if I do that now he will laugh at me and say 'Well it works 50% of the time".

I just feel this is too much and that any defence facing this situation would just go into pass prevent and shut the opposition down especially given the strength of my team compared to my opponent. Now it looks like I have to go to my playbook and put in about 100 instructions on dealing with 4th down. Going for it 15 times is not realistic, succeeding 8 times is even less realistic.

If it really is this easy then I will try it when on offense. However, I really think excessive use should face a penalty.

I think that is funny, in particular 4th & 29
You did won the game by a large margin, but still everyone has the right to create the playbook in their own way. I played last season a game exactly like yours, were the manager went for it on 4th down every time. The same result as yours, i won by a huge margin.
I'm not saying that it's ok for someone to do that, but i believe the chance of winning for that manager is slim to none.

I agree that people should be able to create the playbook in their own way. It's just that 1) I think it should be more difficult to succeed on 4th down especially if it happens, as in this case, 15 times. The defence would be wise to it and especially on 4th and 29 go into pass defense. 2) This is a new manager and may not be au fait with the playbook. As I said in my first post I would have liked to offer some advice to him/her but having a success rate of 50% means my advice might fall on deaf ears.

I'm not sure about the strengths of both teams in your game but in mine my team strength was much greater and so I would have won even if s/he hadn't kept going for 4th down.

I don't understand what you're getting at.
The manager of the Clovers simply gambled and extended their drives.
All you can do is to make sure that your playbook covers these situations.
That's why RZA is so great, because it offers this flexibility.
Reading between the lines, though, it sounds like you want the calculation of the plays to be changed just so they stop to go for the fourth down.
I'm also new to RZA and only go for fourth and one yard, but even in the NFL there is currently a team that goes for almost every fourth attempt and is better than 50% as far as I know.

Oh well, maybe it's just that I'm pretty cautious because (depending upon field situation) going for it on 4th down is a huge risk, as I see it. I would sooner put my trust in my punter and defense rather than risk giving great field position to my opponent.

I'd guess that's why you win and your opponent loses, no?

4th & 29 is pretty wild, though

50% is extremely realistic if we're talking about the past 20 or so seasons of NFL attempts.

Looking at just less than, oh, 4 yards to go it's higher. Looking at 4&10+, though, like a handful of the successes in the original example... That is much lower. Oh, 20%, estimating off of a quick askjeeves search results.

But 50% in total isn't unreasonable at all if most are under 5 yards to go instead of 10+.

I understood you were playing vs a human controlled team, right?

If so, it is not about statistics. It is much more the decision of a single person, the manager. So I do not get why we discuss statistics, or even the engine and the game. It is the manager / coach who told his team to go for it every single 4th down.

What I am missing?

Just trying to suggest more realism, from my point of view.
