I recently put in a formation suggestion with the goal of allowing managers to have some defense options against opponents who use the flank only tactics that have been getting some chatter lately. (Is abusing the system too strong of language?)
Pete said he hasn't shot it down yet, so I thought I'd try to start some conversation about the possibility, with the hopes that the programming will at least be feasible.
The basic idea is to call for a double-team against outside WRs. If a coach knows the opposing team is almost always going to pass to certain receivers, of course he's going to have them double-teamed.

Here's the suggestion threads I posted:
326 double team
335 double team

As mentioned, it would give an option against the flank-only approach, at the cost of some extra risk of being more vulnerable over the middle or on the back-side. Also weak against the run, of course.

What do y'all think?

I think something needs to change, but I am not sure this is the answer quite frankly. To my eye, there are all kinds of unintended consequences possible. The results could indeed be worse.

I would rather see the defense “learn” more quickly and efficiently. Maybe have a bonus modifier added to increase interceptions if someone uses flank passing as a primary tactic to win games. I feel like a diminishing return and increased risk is the deterrent we need here, and I don’t think this would be near as difficult to implement as a new formation would. That said, if new formations are the only option, I support it.

For the record, I do think the flank tactic is a problem for the game. I won’t be shy about using it going forward though. We all play by the same rules and until something changes, I won’t put my team at a disadvantage.
