This one will be our 10th Draft, and we’re still not sure if we do it right. We did pull some interesting players, and some of them are valuable pieces of the squad that’ll be fielded this season. Leading the charge of drafted players on the team are those from our very first draft in S49, CB Andrew Roth (pick #1), WR Baron Jevtic (#2) and FB Montell Mullings (#3), with the first two coming off big franchise contracts this season. Luck was pretty apparent with these picks, as we were even less clueless than now of how to distinguish good prospects. Especially Jevtic and Roth have been staples on their respective positions ever since, and with FB Mora retiring Mullings will be the starter going into this season. Two players from the S50 draft have been getting the franchise contract treatment as well: #1 pick TE Monroe Riera got his just last season, #2 pick RB Mo Bolen has his running already since S55. And just yesterday the #1 pick of the S51, FB Àlex Riera, got his big payday when he was rewarded for his play with a 5 year franchise contract that made him the 4th best paid player on the team. He still has a lot of room to grow, which we’ll exploit in the next seasons to make him truly great at his position. On the O-Line 3 drafted players will be starting this season, being OC Tep Samenem (pick #1 of the S53 draft), OG Evandro Ásporsson (#2 S52) and OT Pandu Oyinlola (#3 S54). The jury is still out on Oyinlola if he’ll be really good, but it’ll come down to playing time and gathering experience to unlock the potential that he has. Right now he’ll be a bit of a weak link on the O-Line, though. We did not have that much luck drafting players on the defensive side of the ball. There’ll be no drafted players to start this season, the closest to see the field being DL Edgar Rojas (#2 S54) and FS Kazuhiko Enomoto (#3 S52). It is not that we did not try to get good defensive players in past drafts, but those are, at least from our experience, always highly sought after and usually picked quite early. And as our tendency to play reasonably successful has usually prevented us from picking high those players were gone by the time it was our turn to choose. We’ll try again this season, though. 9 out of the first 10 players on our board are defensive players, maybe we’re lucky this time. If not we must try to fill the spots on D with prospects from our Youth Academy… which worked pretty well in our first 10 seasons, too. But that’s a different topic for maybe later in this thread
