I really REALLY do... In the past week with the addition of the coaches I really made a vested effort to make some moves in the market for players as well and the flaws unbearable. I know the game is a constant work in progress but I think this the #1 problem in the game and its frustrating because the problem is so glaringly obvious. A lot of the issues we've dealt with (coach introduction aside) have been mainly cosmetics. The TM is a real game changer and tips the balance of power completely...

I first paid attention to the transfer market after that thread where managers were talking about that blitz for the 6mil kicker. Its such a deflating and unrealistic process that I'm pretty much to the point of not even bothering to enter the market. I started this game in the middle of the first season and since then I've promoted two players from my YA and sold two players... add the three Draft picks and my team is unchanged.

I know I could use some patience on the matter.. but I've bid on roughly 8 players and havent gotten close to signing one of them. I have some solutions on how to make the TM more accessible for those who cant hover around the game around the deadline period.. but Pete I was wondering if this was an issue on the ToDo. The numbers of us starting to accumulate real cash is growing and I can only assume people will look more and more to the TM.. I cant see how this current model is sustainable. I consider myself a tough competitor in this game and when you have managers like me scrolling ALL THE WAY down the coaches list and bidding on subpar coaches in the hopes that no one else will bid on them.. I'd say there is a problem.

The question is: if you were in charge, what would you do?

Buying a expensive player is luxury like buying a Rolex. Its a nice to have, but not a must. Football is a teamsport. It is better to buy 10 players for 10 Mio instead of one player for 20 Mio.
I have the experince, that having good backups is more important. At the end of the game your star is tired and than?
So search on the transfermarket for players, which you can develope.

In our Seadevil, this is the acutuall the best way, because none of our teams bought a additional superstar.

After about a season and a half of training, your original players start to catch up to the draftees.

Most of my original guys are close to or >20 on their primary skill. For instance, my top DL is Speed>28, Strength>30 and Tackle>21. My rushing leader is Spd>24, Str>32, Carry=19.7. They don't have some of the secondary skill levels as the draftees (Agility, Positioning, etc.) but I'm starting to train that now.

I'm not saying I don't like having the 2 stars I bought, but they are not outperforming my regulars atm.

By the end of Season 3, I expect we will discover our new draftees are not better than most of our original guys who have been training for 3 seasons, and are not automatic starters.

After some serious attempts to sign some free agents during season 1, I've given up on using the transfer market to improve my team.
I don't have the time and opportunities to take part in some of the bid wars that have been taken place there.
If some people can afford to sit down close to the deadline and place offer after offer on players, that's fine. But I just can't.
So I continue building my team during the draft and with my YA.

I get stuck in those bid wars, too, and I'm not fond of being up at 4AM local.

You can try to avoid those wars by bidding early on a guy you want, and upping the bid 50% each time someone overbids you. Example of proactive bidding:

$1000 (your first bid)
$2000 (other bidder)
$3000 you
$4000 other
$6000 you
$7000 other
$10000 you
$11000 other
$15000 you
$16000 other
$24000 you
$25000 other
$35000 you
$36000 other
$50000 you
$51000 other
$75000 you
$76000 other
$110000 you
$111000 other
$165000 you
$166000 other
$245000 your 12th bid....
etc

If a third or fourth person is bidding, you can get up to a quarter million even faster. A lot of useful players go for a lot less than $250k.

The trick is to bump it 150% each time you bid, and to hit it every time your Pinboard lights up. If you start right after you find him soon after he hits the transfer list, you can easily get him up to your max price before the bid war starts.

You still may not get him, but at least you'll know you got to bid your top price on him. I drove Luttazzi up to $11Mil, and went to bed. In the morning I discovered I owned him (or maybe he owns me, considering his salary ).

Only 150.000$/season for the next 5 years. In 3 season he will be on strike for a better contract

Your HC owns you. In one season he will have enough money to buy your whole team.

There are some good players available without spending 20million on 1 player. Often the bids go crazy and in my opinion alot of the time teams overspend on what the player is worth. If you set an amount you are happy to buy a player for and then stick to that in the long run of the game you'll be fine.

I wondered about that, but decided to roll the dice. If it blows up on me; it blows up.

Great advice - hard to follow, but great advice.

I never tried to buy a world class player. I understand the competition is tough when it comes to buying some players but I've tried buying players who would be 2nd/3rd stringers and still never really have a shot at buying him.

The way I see it.. its not the managers, its not the price.. its the process. To win a player all you have to be is the last player to bid on him before the deadline. That right in of itself is a critical flaw that really needs no explanation on why it is unfair.

I'm not saying there is a perfect system to buy/sell players but it shouldnt be subject to time zone and owner availability to such a degree. How free agents are bought/sold in real life wouldnt work either.

Off the top of my head if you asked me the most "fair" way to handle transfers in a game like this is silent auction. That means how much a manager thinks that player is worth and what it will take to sign him.. he submits that bid and by the end of the deadline the manager who offered up the most money will land the player. I think eliminates the ebay style timing and would set people at ease in that if they lost the player then they know they didnt give the best offer avaliable. I'm sure there are better option than this one but in the short I really do feel the silent auction format would be more fair to players who cant sit and bid at the deadline.
