Any advice on negotiating contracts? Just turned that feature on…

Do you just keep negotiating until the 5th time and then take that one or is it more complicated than that?

You only have 5 chances to come to a contract agreement. If you fail to sign him before that he finishes the season and leaves the team (I'm losing a nice 19yo linebacker because I was too cheap).

I usually start out offering less than he is currently getting and see how much he asks for.

It seems the longer the length of the contract you offer, the more he will ask for (which makes sense).

I start to panic if I haven't signed him by the 4th offer.

You might want to start out by practicing with 'this season plus 1' contract offers to players you would not be too upset about losing.

Generally if you end up offering what he is "worth" then he will sign with you. The draft picks were expensive though, 16k!

I only signed one of those guys to a Franchise contract....$12,500/week.

I'm going to watch what happens with the shorter contracts the other ones signed to see how it works out before franchising another one.

Last season I signed a bunch of guys for less than their estimated wage. This season they seem to be negotiating a bit stronger and costing me more.

So does the estimated wage go away once you've initiated contract mode? Is there a way to view the estimated wage?

Thanks,

Here is what it says on one of my unsigned guys when I open his HR negotiation window::

Tries left: 5
Wage estimation based on skills: $2270
Franchise contracts possible

John Smith: Hi Boss, how are you?
You: Hello Paul, let's talk about your contract!
John Smith: Great, let's start!

His current Wage is $1,250 since I signed him to a "this and another season" contract last season. Apparently I've trained him enough at his primary position skill that now he wants a lot more. I know from experience if he does not accept my first offer he will come back with a demand for more than $2,270. I'm planning to sell him so I only want to offer a short contract and less money than he is currently making. So I'll offer $1,240 ($10 less than his current salary) and we'll see how upset he gets.

I type in "1240" and s e l e c t "this and another season" and click Place Bid. This generates a popup that reviews the offer and gives you a chance to Confirm or Cancel. I'll confirm it. As expected he's unhappy.

You: How about $ 1240 weekly for a period of 2 seasons?
John Smith: THIS MUST BE A JOKE...if you are looking for a waterboy I am the wrong guy! Offer at least $2510 or we don't come together here!

I'm not going to make any further offers unless I decide not to sell him, in which case I'll be sure to sign him before EOS so I don't lose him.

So this dialogue keeps track of your offers and his demands, and the "Tries left" changes to show you only have "4" now.

I've only had to go 3 rounds with a couple of guys and have 1 franchised player. Maybe i've been lucky so far.

I try to save some money and negotiate a little too hard sometimes. That makes it more exciting, for sure.

I tried to sign my #1 draft pick to a franchise contract and ended up making a panicked switch to a this+1 contract at the 5th offer and made a big offer to be sure. I get to try again next season.

Is this a real copy & paste?

Wondering since John is sitting there, and the boss is saying hello to Paul

Maybe it's a part of the negotiating? I would definetly ask for less, if the Boss didn't know my name.
