Here's the official definition:
The British Isles = ALL the islands, including the whole of Ireland and the Isle of Man The UK = England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - but not the Isle of Man Great Britain = England, Scotland and Wales and surrounding islands directly belonging to England/Scotland/Wales, but not any part of Ireland or the Isle of Man. The UK is 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' The Isle of Man is similar to Gibraltar and the Falklands - they are a crown dependency, officially self governing for local/financial matters, but under overall governance of the UK in terms of defence and foreign policy. I still find it weird though that we have the British flag as well as flags from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales (same for the EU flag), but then that's down to my own stance - I am British 1st, English 2nd, and I do not consider myself to be European.
