The 5-3 is only so prevalent currently due to the fact that teams cannot yet reliably pass the ball.

From my own experience, when teams are fairly evenly matched, the only way to reliably stop a running game is with a decent DL and 5-3!

There currently seems to be a little too much emphasis on the DL in general in RZA - from my own experience of playing the game, the LBs are the glory boys, the best athletes in the squad, who make the most tackles, and who generally lead the defense.

If you O-Line block the D-Line very good, the opponents LBs have a lot to do. One LB of my last oponents had 23 Tackles. My only impression is, that the LB mostly are lined to deep behind the Line and stop the run around 6 yards behind the LOS. I hope this will be better with better LB skills.

Or with better game engine, this one has very few points of contact with real AF.
IMHO, obviously.

About what "real" AF do you talking about? NFL, Collage, backyard?

NFL.
The other leagues are too different to estabilish a common rule.

You can talk about NFL Fooball, if your players have all important skills at around 35. 20-30 are Collage level and below 20 German Football League. Yes, actuall we play at a very poor level.

Yes, but the 5-3-3 is the most irreal formation I've see.
Only in goaline situations you can see 5 DLs, but with 4 LBs; and the 5-2 is typically an high school formation.

When the passing game catches up that 5-3 def will suck. Imagine a team throwing against a goal line stand defense? The defense will get some cheap sacks but they will give up the big plays.

OK.
Play with a 3-4-4 against a good team with a good RB and we will see if your opponent will risk more than 20 passes...

That is what makes it strategic. Right now defensive play calling is pretty vanilla (IMO). No one is too concerned with the pass. When people can pass AND run then it will get tricky. Over commit with blitzes, playing 5-3 vs Big I on pass, playing 3-4 on proset run could all have interesting results. When passing is viable you would think the 4-3 would have some more meaning as a go between. As is now it seems the 4-3 is horrible.
