Judo is the main one in our house.... my daughter won the last national AJA tournament at U25kg (she is only 8, so maybe in 12-16 years time ), my son also enjoys it, and I take part too to encourage them.

I've already watched far more of the Olympics than I intended to

Thought the opening ceremony was brilliant, much better than I was expecting. The Queen's entrance was very funny, and including Rowan Atkinson was a top choice too. Just hoping they are saving Del Boy and Rodney for the closing ceremony now though.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I thought giving the torch to the kids to light the flame was a terrible choice. It's meant to be a big honour for someone who has achieved something at Olympic level I thought so giving it to people who might not even qualify seemed a bit off.

Now off to watch some more... I mean do some work

Initially i agreed with you - but then having thought about it i think it was the right thing to do.

Mainly because how can you distinguish when we have so many sports personalities that could claim to be deserving? Many would put Steve Redgrave at the top (i expected it to be him) - but then why not Daley Thompson? Linford Christie? Seb Coe/Steve Cram? Jonathan Edwards? Matt Pinsent? Chris Hoy? Ben Ainslie? Kelly Holmes?

Maybe 7 out of them would have been better than 7 up and coming stars - but its (supposedly) all about the future rather than the past, so i reckon they got it right - and the way the flame was lit will be remembered much more than who lit it for sure.

I understand the argument for saying it was a good idea to give it to the younger ones but in a 8 years if only 1 of them qualifies for the Olympics or if 1+ turns out to be a real bust and falls off the wagon completely I think it means that the honour was taken away from the likes of Steve Redgrave. On the other hand if those 7 are all multi-time gold medalists then I was very wrong

btw....that 16 y/o Chinese swimmer who smashed the WR and swam the last length quicker than the mens winners....is there any reason at all why she should be doubted as much as she is being? shes tested clean every time....think its shocking the aspersions being cast about her...

The main problem is that the Chinese swimming team have plenty of history with regards to doping - they've made a rod for their own back by their previous behaviour.

I hope she is 'permanently' clean all year round, as her performances have been astonishing.... but I can fully understand why the comments have been made.

Remember the Irish swimmer who won gold in Atlanta or maybe Sydney who came from nowhere to knock something like 20 odd seconds off her PB in less than 12 months then tampered with her samples and it was actually whiskey used? They are looking back over history of both athletes and Chinese swimming then casting curious glances at her.

I've watched bits but enjoyed the mens cycling road race apart from the worlds "anyone but the British" mindset.

I thought the opening ceremony was a nice touch a history of Great Britain followed by a parade of all the nations we have conquered gotta love sikipedia lol

Marion Jones never tested positive.......... but she later admitted using performance enhancing drugs.

Lance Armstrong has never officially tested positive ..... but the USADA have charged him, meaning they think he has a case to answer.

An Italian cyclist called Franco Pelizotti (Tour de France - King of The Mountains winner 2009) never tested positive ...... but he got a 2 year ban.
His 'biological passport' was considered dodgy and he was banned based upon that ..... CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) upheld the decision.

guess its just too much to hope for that a performance like that is genuine and along has come a swimmer that may just be someone who takes that particular discipline to new heights.

if she is genuine, i feel desperately sorry for her to be treated with such doubt and mistrust.....maybe Frankel should be given the same treatment....
