I have been wondering what other managers thinking is on traits. It seems like the consensus in the forums I have read is that traits are fun, but mostly helpful on the margins (if the chances a defender makes an interception when he is thrown-at is 2%, long reach takes it to 2.1%, that is an extra interception in every 1,000 tries or every 100ish games).
At the same time, enough traits might add up and make a real difference in close games - an O-line with all stonewall or passblocker could mean a couple more unhurried passes or a few extra rushing yards, a defensive backfield with suretackler across the board might mean one less missed tackle and ending a drive. In the how many players with traits do you have? thread suggests people are pursuing traits. And for those in the "physicals are everything" camp, wouldn't traits that boost physicals like trackstar be at a real premium? I guess I'm wondering two things: 1. How much do you value traits? what traits at what positions do you hold out for? How much of a hit to physicals would you take for a trait? 2. If you were going to create a trait-optimized team, what single trait would you want at each position? Do you optimize for high-value, low probability events like ints and fumbles or do you focus on a small bump in common events with heavyweight? How much does your thinking about the impact of individual traits weigh in? |

I find #2 tough to answer. I do not know what traits the other team is having. This is why I am happy to have players with traits matching their position, and do not care about the type of trait.

In my opinion traits are really important if with it the player become something special.
SPE=50 + Track Star QB TAL 5* natural leader and/or strong arm Nice to have if the player deserves a place in my roster even without the trait. I do not care about trait at all in all the other cases. My current RB was born as a QB strong arm INT=35.4... I hate players with SPE about 40 + Track star I cut them immediately Last edited on 2020-04-07 15:40:43 by PJRAVENS |

If I must pick one and only one, I would go with:
QB WR TE LB: Track Star RB: Ball manager FB, OL: Pass Blocker NT DT: Brick wall DE: Slippery CB: Long reach SF: Sure tackler K/P: Strong leg |

Don't try to escape. You need to pick only one per position my friend.

How much does your thinking about the impact of individual traits weigh in? See my personal list above. If I must choose a CB with Sure Tacler or one with Long Reach, even in every other possible stats, I prefer the one with Sure Tackler, because I prefer a "normal plays perfection" to the "single big play", since I follow the Tony Damato rule of "games won adding inch after inch" |

In my team, there are :
1 OL Strong leg 1 DL Ball manager 1 LB Stone wall Because skills matter, (ideal) traits don't. |

Yeah, I agree that physicals and skills matter much more than traits. I have some players with useless traits too. I recently sold off a DL draft pick who had Fearsome and Brickwall because his strength and speed both red-capped at 45, lower than I want for on my DL. I have not made any serious attempt to prioritize traits.
At the same time, I don't value traits at 0. I have chosen between DT and NT prospects in my YA and gone with players with 1-2 less on speed because of useful traits (I wouldn't do the same thing for a 1-2 points of strength). Also, a lot of traits matter precisely because skills matter. I build out all of my OL too the same basic skill profile, they all have >49 strength and >35 teamwork, and by the time they are starters have reasonable experience. If If can get blocking and agility to be functionally 2-2.5 points higher without paying the extra 30,000-50,000 in salary, that seems worth something. I'm wondering how much people value that increase and if there are some traits other managers value much higher than others. For example, I think pass blocker seems pretty valuable, but I have a few players with Ball stripper, and as best I can tell it translates to about 1 more fumble caused every season or 2, which is just not that big a bump. |
