Now that -G.O.A.T- has officially retired, the net is getting flooded with messages. Some messages like Eli Manning's, were he says basically that he saw -G.O.A.T- win Super Bowls while he was in college, during Eli's NFL career (16 years!) and after he had retired, made me remember that Eli had a great career, he won 2 Super Bowls, had me remember a thought I've had for some time.

If Mahomes (could have chosen Josh Alen, Burrough, etc. any of the young next gen stars) wins, lets say, 3 super bowls in his career, that will be a great achievement! Dan Marino had a great career and won no bowls. -G.O.A.T- has distorted what a great QB career is. But it is an exception, an outlier, a GOAT career.

I, personally, think someone like Aaron Rodgers is a better passer, but -G.O.A.T- has that leadership, killer instinct, etc that is also needed.

Rodgers, with 1 super bowl, and so many playoffs (even if they accuse him of choking) has had a great career too.

I think he was a great QB, who had the luck to play for 2 coaches knowing how to setup teams and to keep that strength for some time.

There were many other great players, regardless the prosition, plaiyng for coaches far from being that smart and those players were only able to show what they can do in a few period of those teams.

Those combinations of players and coaches are rare and (you never know) with Tom and his coaches maybe something never happening again, so yes, that was a hell of a career. Still, believing he would have had a similar career with lets say the Lions would be madness.

All of us just have to remember that he made Patriots trade/sell Drew Bledsoe, who was the highest paid QB at that time and franchise QB. And some 199th pick made him absolete for NE.

Yes, it takes a lot of luck to do that, but also a lot of hard work.

He did have great coaches, he did have great offensive players, yes he did have great defensive unit, but also he was the one that made them better than they are. He was leader in locker room, he was the one that defense knew if they get a ball they will score. He is the one that WR or TE knew that ball will be right there if it supposed to be there.

One of a kind. Unique. His records maybe will never be broken because I just can't imagine someone to play 22 years at that level even he is called Mahomes.

This is discussion shouldnt be about rings only. He was a great QB with superb skills for reading the opp. He was coached well, surrounded with good staff on and off the field in Foxborough. He was putting himself on fight at every training, was preparing well, and had some luck with healthyness of course. The combination makes this career outstanding, and Tom one of the greatest. And of course his personality was a key, since he was able to repeat success with another organisation.

Again, I do not understand the discussion about one being "the greatest". There is no true measure for that. Football changes, so do careers. Sure he becomes a hall of fame member, with no discussion needed.

In my opinion the indicator of how good he was lay in his surrounding cast. He cycled through so many different TE, WR, and RBs' on offense and maintained elite levels of performance.

It seemed it didn't matter who the wr's were he would make them look good. How many wr's looked good with him at NE but struggled afterwards? Perhaps the shorter list is how many performed well with him at NE and continued that level of performance after they left?

So maybe you could remove the little trick changing his name in the forum with GOAT?

I implemented that when a certain user was going mad on that player in very unsubstantial offenses and annoyed half of the forum that way. So I though it would be nice to replace every occurancy of Toms name in that post by goat. It worked.
