That super long thread is super cumbersome to sift through. So I thought I'd start a couple of threads for specific question types that people could post in. This one is for questions about formation use and how players function in said formations.

What are formations people have had success with against the flex and the wishbone?

In my last game I got absolutely sliced and diced by the wishbone. I had no pass rush with a 434. My opponent was 10 of 13 pass attempts for 11 yards per pass attempt. Take out the 3 incompletions and they averaged 14.8 yards per completion.

I know the 434 doesn't work amazing here (which is weird but another topic) but in this formation there are only 2 wide receivers vs 2 cb, 2sf, and 3 lb. Yes, if I had rushed the QB it would have created pressure.

It doesn't make sense for this formation to have no effect but be that as it may what formations have worked for people vs the pass?

I would also like to know about vs Flex while I'm thinking about it. What works good vs pass and rush.

I think these are difficult formations (college level ones for the most part) to deal with because they are super unconventional and you throw in that rb's don't receive except in rare occasions, fb's don't block in running plays nor receive in passing plays.

On a side note, if FB's did receive in the passing, the rb's received as a regular option, and the FB blocked then these two formations would be deadly.

Ok....I gotta know....am I being ghosted? lol. I kinda feel when I ask the questions that are tactics based whether it is formations or playbooks people just clam up like I'm asking for the top secret information. lol

I find the best way to find out what works for you and your players and whether a particular offensive formation works against a defensive formation is to run scrimmages

Well yes I have done that but it doesn't account always account for variabilities between teams player builds and playbooks. Hearing from several managers experiences would provide a clearer view.

I truly appreciate your response but I also still laugh out loud little that it still avoids answering the question.

Three man fronts are more effective against passing plays. You'll likely have better luck if you plan to defend pass or run rather than specific formations.
Take another look at the plays you were referring to and see if you were defending pass and they ran or vice versa.

previously given advice
Specifically:

Shadow wrote:
Defense I like LB blitzes very much and have them normally set to 75% except the opponents QB is quicker than my blitzing players or I am pretty sure to expect running plays. I believe a sack is the easiest way to stop a drive.
I don't recommend to use the Dime and 3-1-7 formations, they aren't very effective. The Goalline defense shall be used only in goalline situations, else there is a high risk of a big play.
I normally also don't use the 5-2 and 4-3-4 defense.

3-3-5: best pass defense, but tends to give up many 1st downs on running plays, allows very few big plays

3-4-4: good pass defense, moderate running defense, allows some big plays

4-4-3: average pass defense, good running defense, allows many big plays

5-3-3: average pass defense, best running defense, but gives up more long runs than the 4-4-3, allows most big plays

Up to you if that advice applies to all formations equally, your team as well as others, etc.

Thank you for the replies.

I have a question based on ablefty's reply.

I do get that with the 3 on d line you have more coverage. If you use 4 does the pressure on the qb increased enough to be worth it?

I think I'm asking this out loud more so I remember to test a few scrimmage games to see.

I'm also wondering if you had 5 monster dline and monster lb to blitz if it is fast enough to get to the qb before he can make a completion. I suppose that is just a matter of risk/reward but I'll experiment to see how much risk and reward that is.

Based on that post if kind of feels like the safest route is using a 344 and 443 as there is less chance of really big plays. Hmmm.....
