This is kind of a stupid question (but Americans don't learn about other countries in school much), but what's the difference between the German Chancellor and the President?

Was just reading about how Steinmeier was re-elected, but I thought Olaf Scholz had just taken over Merkel as the nation's leader.

Is there still some legacy monarchs in Germany too?

chancellor - daily business, head of government

president - more of a representative role. has much less rights than the POTUS, but can agree or veto on some more general laws, as example.

Yes, Scholz was taking over from Merkel for being the new chancellor.

Steinmeier just got reelected today for president.

if you look for the pure power: chancellor over president.

Once again Serbia is one of "democratic" countries that beats all of that.

We have our "beloved" president Vucic, who is president, chancellor, all ministries, army, police, health, plus he is involved in sport as much as he likes.

One man show, rest of us just need to enjoy in poverty that he brought to our country, while telling us every f....ng day how good we live and that if wasn't for him, we will be much poorer.

Complete idiot.

The president has some essential duties, very important for the running of the state.

He is (as it was done yesterday) elected not by the people, but by the parlament AND a delegation send by the counties with numbers of representers based on the people living in those counties, often prominent people or people who earned that honor.

Once elected the president does
- takes the vow of ministers and chancelors. If he would say NO it would not help much, but would create some chaos, which to sort out would take a while. Time which might be useful to prevent another 3. Reich.
- sign every goverment law. Without his signature it's not live.
In the past it did happen that the president did say NO or NOT THAT WAY and then the law needs some reajustments.

The rest is more or less representive stuff.
We had good ones and bad ones in the past, the good ones did find ways to bring topics into the goverments business they did otherwise not have on the agenda, while the bad once did more or less sit the time off. None did really BAD things.

Chancellor is basically the main leader of the goverment. Still not that powerful you might think.

YOUR President, or the french President is much more powerful.

The german goverment system was desigened to spread the power wide to make a ONE-PERSON ruling very hard.

And yes, the royal families of the Kaiserreich do still exist, but have NO power at all. We got rid of them for good.

Actually, the American president isn't as powerful as people think. In the states, we have a system of checks and balances - - the legislature, executive (president & much of the government departments under him) and the judiciary are supposed to be in have ability to limit the other branches of government. We often have a president and then one of the houses of legislature from a different party - - and that often result in "girdlock". Some might argue that's a good thing.

Also, in the states, the individual states have all the powers not enumerated for the federal government. So with this whole Covid thing, Trump or Biden could push for certain policies, but in actuality, the states were really the ones picking and choosing what to do.

I think the US President just seems to be very powerful, because the US is so big. But there are states, judges and the houses of Congress all limiting his power - - plus he's beholden to a lot of special interests - - honestly I think Trump and Biden have actually been two of our weaker presidents (in terms of getting their stuff implemented).
