Yes Jack. Totaly agreed and my personal take on this regarding the QB start with the vision of the Offensive Coordinator and adjusting the playbook to what that QB does very well.
So the bottom line is that all of it start with the Coaches and how to use the best skills of that player at 100%, otherwise you end up with busts like Johnny Manziel, Ryan Leaf or JaMarcus Russell just to name a few. |

I absolutely agree with both of you! Drafting a player in general is always a gamble. Nobody knows whether the player will really fit into the system or perform as well as you'd like. Especially with the QB, of course, because he gets the most attention in a game. Lamar, in my opinion, was not a gamble. Personally, I saw something big from the tapes and the combine, which is why I wrote that I would have loved to see him with the Steelers. But of course coaches, game system and many other circumstances always play a role and whether he would have been as good if he had sat on the bench behind Big Ben for a long time is questionable.
But you see it again and again that QBs are selected by the "wrong" franchise. Sometimes you can see which type of QB is most likely to succeed in which division. AFC North always had very successful QBs who were big and tough. Then came the quality. AFC North is a tough and especially physical battle in every game. It's always like a battle. You need tough QBs who can handle it and big players who can see everything. That's why Mayfield was only successful for a short time. The guy is a good QB, but a bit too small for the AFC North. Now with the Bucs you can see how good he can be in a franchise that needs that type of player. |
