Having people from so many parts of the world in the game, I thought it would be a good idea to ask around for the places worth visiting, if being nearby. I amended this thread's title with "Germany" not because it's the only place I have some interest in, but because I think it would be more useful, if other places will follow - in separate threads.

I have visited, or at least been to, several places in the country my own country has a border with, Germany. Starting with two towns in the north-eastern corner, Ahlbeck and Herringsdorf on the Baltic sea coast. My memories of both are blurred, because it was over 50 years ago. What I still remember well was they seemed much cleaner than the towns on the other side of the border. Speaking of which, I think it has changed a lot, in the right direction, in Poland, since the transformation in the 1990's. And the unpleasant pictures on the border, where my countrymen were trying to smuggle the things you couldn't buy in Poland back then, except on the black market. Also a huge change, that.

My next destination in Germany was Berlin. On several occasions. The first few still as a teen, and only one side of the Wall. Alexanderplatz( ), with the impressive tower( still there ), from which I could see the soldiers, primarily interested not in protecting it from crossing by foreigners, but in preventing from fleeing their own country's citizens...
Unter den Linden avenue, with all there's to see along the way ( ).
The train station ( - I LOVE the feel of those "ancient" large halls that the train enters, although it was way better when there was still a chance that train was with a cloud of smoke coming off the chimneys). I don't remember, but I think it must have been the Lichtenberg Station. One shock was it was where for the first time in my life I saw a rat, through the train's window . Because that contrasted with my picture of Germany as a country where it's absolutely impossible to see something so inappropriate .
The airport, though it was more like an air _field_ , then. Don't remember what its name was but doesn't matter - no chance it's still there, at least not as an airfield anymore. Guess the citizens of East Germany didn't get to need airports a lot, back then...
Well, also the building that used to be called Zentralhaus der Jungen Pioniere German Titov, and the Palisaden str. Both so many "" for me that there is no space to put them all, here. But these are for very personal reasons so I don't know how cool they would be for anyone but me.
Never got to visit the famous Berlin ZOO, so I think I have yet to have the reason to give it or or may be even more.
Got to see, though it was after the Fall of the Wall, Brandenburg gate , and to take advantage of the fantastically thought of transportation system of U-Bahn and S-Bahn.

Many years later Berlin was the place were I flew from the US to celebrate the New Years Eve 2000/2001. For the randevous with my future wife, who flew there from Warsaw. Aside from some of the places I already knew, we visited (and I _strongly_ recommend it for anyone who prefers doing things, rather than read about them) Technikmuseum Berlin . Add a few extra , if you're as much a fan of models of sailboats as I am - tell me you wouldn't be in h(e)aven walking around literally a hundred of them! But not only the "the past" but also the "modern/future" part of that museum is really something! (not sure how they're both named precisely - something about science or physics, the latter of the two)
I'd add the small cafe, in the former West Berlin part of the city, with an unforgettable feel, where we got to drink good German , while listening to the outstanding performance of playing intoxicatingly drums by some young Uruguaian. Sadly, both the name of the drummer and the name of the cafe ( )fell into the "forgettable" category ( - ME! )

While visiting Berlin, we also visited Potsdam ( ) and Cottbus( ). The thumbs just for the impression. Didn't have time to _really visit_ visit.

Any places in Germany you have warm memories from visiting yourself? Please share.

I think that depends heavily on your preferences regarding stuff like

- is it OK or not OK to have many people around you?
- nature or urban area?
- plains, hills, mountains, lakes and/or sea?

My personal favorites:
- You already mentioned Ahlbeck and Heringsdorf, which are 2 of 3 villages called the 'Kaiserbäder' (translates in Baths of the Emperor) on the island of USEDOM. Beautiful area.
- absolute great is the island of AMRUM at the north sea. Major beach, lots of space, not so many people compared to other beach areas

To be honest, I don't really care if it's urban or a remote place
I like old castles, in which I prefer not to have too many people around because fewer people means it's easier to imagine yourself in those old times. Plus it's easier to not just ask but actually have a conversation with a guide.
I like rural places just as much. Also, the fewer people around, the better, there. Not neccessarily - no one around! It's those places where you can actually meet people with whom it's real fun to chat, have a beer and to warm the sausages over the fire
But I also enjoy the urban. Like Berlin, above. And in the cities, people are not a nuissance to me - just the opposite. To me, half of what's the city is all about is its inhabitants. So even though I like searching for each city's little known secrets - they gain a lot if I get to socialise with locals there.

Thanks for the tip about Usedom. Might be nice to get a refreshed look. And that other island, on the North Sea

I have never got to visit Dresden. Which I have heard many good things about.
And Rostock... I don't know why, that one. There are a few places around the world I really really want to visit, for no apparent reason. Like Seattle, like Hong Kong (these two I already have). Costa Rica. Cuba. And Rostock. The only reason I can think of, is the sound of the city's name. Or may be the name in which I have first heard of Rostock - Hansa Rostock. The football club's name. Sounds way better in my ears than Real Madrid

Rostock? Hmmmm. Not my dream destination.
I would prefer STRALSUND, WISMAR, LÜBECK and if you like huge cities, Hamburg.

But I was interrupted by lunch.

More places I like:
- The area at the baltic sea called FISCHLAND-DARSS-ZINGST is an island (you can't see that anymore, 100% by road and almost completely connected to the mainland) between Rostock in the west of it and Stralsund in the east of it.
It has several beautiful village, long beaches and a big national park in the north west of it as forest connected to the quite empty beach.
- LÜBECK as city, especially the old town is like a museum people live in. And it is the famous origin of a sweet called marzipan.
- LANGEOOG is an island at north sea, more western than Amrum. It is a car-free island, with just one village but about 15 kilometers of beach and nature.
- HOLNIS at the baltic sea is a half-island near Flensburg, very remote, nice small beaches, not many hotels, just a lot of camping.
- COLOGNE as city I did grew up close to is, especially in the center, also a giant museum from roman times onward with the biggest gothic cathedral, lost of museums and with a bunch of people who are friendly and do welcome everyone.

As you can see, for me, a lot of SEA areas, which is just my (and my wifes) thing.

Thank you!
And regarding the sea, to think of it, I named Rostock, Hong Kong, Seattle.. In Poland I would have named Gdansk/Danzig. All of them harbour cities. And the still little known secret, the wild beaches half way between Ustka and Leba. With the tall sand dunes, crystal clear water (at least it was, when I was last there), no ice cream vendoors, no infrastructure - just a (usually) cold water, very wide (by Polish standards) sandy beach. And as much solitude, as you need.
I have a feeling, we've got something in common

In that case, if you have the chance, visit one of the island destinations I did mention in Autumn. In Summer most have a lot of tourists, but September/October it gets more relaxed and the weather should be better than in spring (the other less crowded period).
