this is an important point. i think that it is important to get more players into the game but those players need to be pretty good too. for example, my roster i play 3 DE's. if i have more than 3 i "check" the top 3 for a league game. I feel that if i only play 2 the whole game, they will both be whipped by the 4th quarter. i don't know this to be certainly true...i just have come to assume as much. would be nice to have some other old-timers chime in to this discussion.

I do the same - get backups into the game. It takes time to develop a strength in depth roster and, of course, the wage bill rises too. So, vital to build gradually (youth academy, I think).

this is my approach. and getting more players in the game builds experience for the future too. I think this explains some of the seemingly ridiculous payrolls in elite.

And strength in depth makes it easier to field a 'B Team' in matches against teams with low ELO - resting the best players and allowing backups to build experience. Of course, there is a danger of losing matches your 'A Team' might have won. Case in point Exiles B Team loss to Versailles Victors in league this season.

so on point indeed i'm finding the "expanded roster" approach to be pretty solid and it seems i sometimes win games vs teams with higher salary. but how a manager implements this is sort of an art...and dependent on the roster

Agreed, it's an art. But only part of the story. I think the guys who stay in Elite have excellent playbooks - an element of RZA I find pretty challenging.

wth i'll get in the weeds on this ...

take the CB position...

if i got 2 CB at 4 star rating
and the third CB is at 3 star rating

I don't want that 3-star CB getting on the field much in a league game so I will "check" the top 2 CB so that the 3-star CB only comes in when the top 2 are injured or extremely fatigued.

if i got 3 4-star rating CB, I "check" the top 3 and figure they will all rotate and nobody will ever be fatigued.

at the end of the day, i will play a slightly fatigued 4-star over a fresh 3-star in the 4th quarter.

If it's a must-win game (eg cup playoff), I am more likely to tick my top players as starters. But for regular league games, my only ticked starter is QB.

I list 6 CBs in my depth chart. 2 x 4.5* at the top of the chart. Then 3 x 4* next (young but good experience) and 1 x 3.5* at the bottom. None of these ticked.

Training/Facilities

Coaching staff

Roster/YA

Multiple Playbooks

optional: Scouting (i don't do it anymore because it's time- consuming)

I don't scout either. My first year in Elite, I was quite close to survival and I scouted every game. But I found it spoilt my enjoyment - I became too emotionally invested in winning. So, I've backed off - more of a general manager than a head coach now.
