Sea Lions Tame the Ghosts at Hammer Sports Park

Written by: Sir Baffleton Gearwhistle III

At Hammer Sports Park, in a Friendly Cup match sponsored by Wonder Comics - The greatest heroes are made by Wonder - the HAMBURG SEA LIONS hosted the Sea Ghosts of Koh Phangan in front of absolutely nobody, because this was not a public game. Experts had predicted a close one, which is what experts do when they do not wish to be laughed out of the room by Tuesday.

The opening act was all teeth and elbows. Sea Ghosts of Koh Phangan won the coin toss and took the ball, but their first drive ended in a turnover on downs after Edgar Kainihewe was stuffed on fourth-and-short. Hamburg were immediately gifted a short field, then promptly treated it like a borrowed supercar in a rainstorm: Emir Pouget missed a long field-goal try.

After that, Alfredo Richter and the HAMBURG SEA LIONS began to purr. Manfred Kühn, Eliseo Espuch, Tony Krämer and Nazar Ovekov all became useful pieces in a passing game that moved the chains with the calm menace of a luxury saloon doing motorway speed in silence. Pouget later corrected his earlier misfire with a successful field goal, then added another before the first quarter had packed away its tools.

The Sea Ghosts, meanwhile, had flashes of genuine menace. Filip Bang found Andy Blanc and Sebastian Kiesl often enough to keep Hamburg honest, but too many drives ended with punts or stubborn fourth-down adventures that went about as well as fitting tractor tyres to a racing yacht. Still, their defence had moments: Dacey Harris, Shaun Schott and Aleksander Næss all appeared in the medical drama subplot, and Næss returned to keep causing bother.

Hamburg produced the first touchdown of the day when Richter found Eliseo Espuch near the goal line, with Pouget adding the PAT. That drive had been wonderfully German in its efficiency: methodical, structured, and apparently designed by someone who alphabetises their breakfast cereal.

Sea Ghosts of Koh Phangan answered before halftime with their best sustained march of the afternoon. Bang mixed throws to Andy Blanc, Hiroaki Morri and Alafu Mutegwamso with runs by Nick Fuchs and Menon Cheekoussen, then connected with Sebastian Kiesl at the goal line for a touchdown. Yuki Uchiyama added the PAT, and suddenly the Ghosts looked less like a haunting and more like a lawsuit.

There were no interceptions or fumbles to decorate the chaos, but there were turnovers on downs everywhere, great clanking mechanical failures dumped across the field. Sea Ghosts of Koh Phangan were stopped on fourth down in the second quarter, then again repeatedly in the third, including one brutal sequence starting deep in their own territory and another red-zone attempt that died on an incomplete fourth-down throw near the goal line.

The third quarter belonged largely to Hamburg’s field-position machine. A Sea Ghosts turnover on downs handed the Sea Lions a short field, and Pouget converted a short field goal. Later, after another fourth-down stop, Hamburg’s attack stalled but Pouget delivered again from distance. Richter briefly left with a sprained ankle, Jeremy McLain stepped in, and the whole thing looked like a television replacement host trying not to touch any expensive buttons. Richter returned, as did the general sense that Hamburg knew where all the levers were.

The fourth quarter was where the Sea Ghosts started throwing kitchen sinks, garden sheds and possibly a small tuk-tuk at the problem. Uchiyama made a long field goal, then another, as Bang leaned on Andy Blanc, An Buchen, Sebastian Kiesl and Hiroaki Morri to drag the away side back into the contest. Hamburg answered with a long Pouget field goal after Richter found Tony Krämer for a vital conversion, which was exactly the sort of drive that drains the clock and the soul.

With under a minute left, Sea Ghosts of Koh Phangan pushed again. Bang moved the ball with completions to Hiroaki Morri and others, and Uchiyama struck another field goal. But Hamburg calmly took the kickoff, handed the ball off, and Tommie Matlock produced the last useful first down, the football equivalent of shutting the garage door while the other chap is still shouting outside.

It was not a match full of fireworks; it was more like watching two bulldozers argue in a gravel pit. Hamburg’s defence repeatedly won the fourth-down knife fights, Pouget’s kicking boot did a tremendous amount of heavy lifting, and the Sea Ghosts showed admirable stubbornness without quite finding the decisive blow.

Final score: HAMBURG SEA LIONS 22 - Sea Ghosts of Koh Phangan 16.
