Hog-Wild Friendly Cup Review: Ex Nihilo Nihil at Alaskan Fur Trappers

Down at Captain J. Cook HMS Resolution Stadium, with Knight Guard Pads sponsoring the whole dust-up and not a single public spectator hollerin’ from the stands, Ex Nihilo Nihil came in like the experts figured they might and left the Alaskan Fur Trappers chewin’ on a cold chunk of disappointment.
The game started with Ex Nihilo Nihil winning the cointoss and choosing to receive, but their first proper drive got bucked clean off the wagon when Ricardo Vasques aimed a pass for Jere Auchumeb and Bryon Hodge picked it off. Hodge rumbled it back a fair piece, setting up Wilson Lightfoot to boot an early field goal for the Alaskan Fur Trappers.
Ex Nihilo Nihil answered with a long, patient march full of Fred Black hammer-runs, tight-end catches, and steady work from Lowell Champion and Ricardo Vasques. Brice Huszcza knocked through a field goal, then later James Raley finished a drive with a goal-line touchdown run and Huszcza added the PAT. That was when the away boys started lookin’ less like guests and more like fellas fixin’ to steal the whole smokehouse.
The second quarter belonged mighty hard to Ex Nihilo Nihil. Lonnie Williford caught a short touchdown after a grinding drive, then Donn Stone got baited into trouble when Russ Witt intercepted him and returned it deep. A few snaps later, Millard Turpin hauled in a touchdown pass, with Huszcza again true on the PAT. Before halftime, Huszcza added another field goal after Ex Nihilo Nihil kept moving the chains with Williford, Lothar Nditi, and Fred Black doing the heavy lifting.
The Alaskan Fur Trappers did not roll over like a lazy hound, though. In the third quarter, Donn Stone finally got the sled moving with completions to Fausto Cave, Errol Best, Carlos Kong, and King Wiseman. Joel Vernon had a scary fumble near the goal line but jumped back on it himself, and Carlos Kong later caught a short touchdown. Wilson Lightfoot added the PAT, and the Fur Trappers had themselves a little spark.
There was plenty of trench-fightin’ too. Salvatore Bloom got to Donn Stone for a sack, Bryon Hodge later planted Ricardo Vasques for a big loss, and the punters spent enough time kickin’ that ball to make a mule dizzy. Injuries popped up along the way for players like Errol Best, Jamal Daniel, Bryon Hodge, Jake East, Curt Gaddis, and Kordell Hakizmana, though several of ’em managed to come back into the fray.
Early in the fourth, the Alaskan Fur Trappers put together another sturdy drive, with Fausto Cave, Al Frye, Lance Higgs, and Joel Vernon helping drag the ball close. Vernon punched in a touchdown from the doorstep, and Lightfoot handled the PAT. For a spell, it looked like the home side might rattle the barn doors loose.
But Ex Nihilo Nihil kept the lid nailed down. Their defense forced punts, their offense chewed clock, and then Patrice Olive made the back-breaker by intercepting Donn Stone and returning it deep into Alaskan territory. Right after that, Vittorio Carfagna gashed the defense, James Raley finished with another touchdown run, and Huszcza made the PAT. That was the final hammer blow, y’all.
