I think Pete's point is that hate is a very strong word. You can want to beat your rivals, wanna be better, strong and faster than them but hate goes further than that, it's wanting to hurt your rival or being happy when something terrible happens to them etc...

I agree that is strong talk for sports. But hating a team lacks that personal element. |

1. feel intense or passionate dislike for (someone). No...I think most people (at least in the states) would describe their feelings towards their rival teams as "I hate the ". In general, I don't think hating something means you mean to harm them. Some people hate broccoli....so they just don't eat it. I think the word has been elevated in some cases to mean something more extreme (i.e. hate crime), but I doesn't have to. Steve SD Blitz |

I guess the same argument could be made regarding all the "military vocabulary" used in football: the trenches, throwing a bomb, field generals (QB), devastating ground attack, kill, warriors, war etc...
