Don't they have sports rivalries in Germany? Like the Lakers-Celtics? Dodgers-Giants? Michigan-Ohio State? USC-UCLA?

I think Pete's point is that hate is a very strong word. You can want to beat your rivals, wanna be better, strong and faster than them but hate goes further than that, it's wanting to hurt your rival or being happy when something terrible happens to them etc...

Edit: And Pete responded faster than me anyway

Not to get all pedantic, but this type of talk is absolutely normal. And I would point out that hating a team is not the same as hating a player. I agree that is strong talk for sports. But hating a team lacks that personal element.

hate
1. feel intense or passionate dislike for (someone).

No...I think most people (at least in the states) would describe their feelings towards their rival teams as "I hate the ". In general, I don't think hating something means you mean to harm them. Some people hate broccoli....so they just don't eat it.

I think the word has been elevated in some cases to mean something more extreme (i.e. hate crime), but I doesn't have to.

I see what you guys are saying but it's a fine line to be perfectly honest. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines hate as "To feel hostility or animosity toward."

I guess the same argument could be made regarding all the "military vocabulary" used in football: the trenches, throwing a bomb, field generals (QB), devastating ground attack, kill, warriors, war etc...

Try this....google most hated players/teams in sports. You'll get a multitude of Top 10 Most Hated lists.

Pete....so you hate Bud Light or just dislike it??
