Hello fellow Managers!

I have been working on compiling a weekly power rankings list using stats from the Statistical Leaders page and my own custom scoring formula.

It's a work in progress but I think a good start. Winning pct is weighted the highest but if you have good offensive and defensive stats with a good point differential you could find yourself among the league's strongest teams.

Check it out: Week 6 Power Rankings

Any feedback is welcome but I hope you enjoy geeking out over numbers as much as I do! My plan is to release my rankings at some point after the weekly games on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Enjoy!

Hi JV

thanks again for the effort!

I had a look at it and want to share some thoughts on it.

Looking at your formula it seems you calculate the score with
Score = 100 - (Win Pct *2.2 +PD Rank+Overall Rank*1.2)
and here you use actually the Win Pct Rank, which makes completely sense. However, it seems that in your ranking the Aliens are ranked at 1 in the Win Pct Rank, the Marauders with 2, the Bulls with 3 and so on, which penelizes the Marauders, Bulls and Dragons which have a win pct of 100% against the Aliens. I would rank them all at 1, having a win pct of 100%. However, this approach has also has a flaw. F.e. having a win pct of 83% (rank 5) vs. a win pct of 80% (rank 9), gives you a deduct of 8.8 pts, which seems high for an almost same win pct.

I was thinking about another approach. If we take win pct rank, PD rank and your overall rank as the 3 factors to calculate the „power rank“, then what we probably want to have is to score a team, that is being ranked 1st in all three categories with 100pts, and a team being last in all three categories with a score of 0. Then taking into account, that the win pct rank has a higher value then the PD rank, we could give all 3 categories weights. Let´s say 50% for the win pct, 20% to PD and 30% to your overall rank as a suggestion.

Using the following formula:

(32-(0,5*WP Rank + 0,2 * PD Rank + 0,3 * Overall rank) )/31*100

we get a score of 100 pts for a team being ranked 1st in the 3 categories and 0 for a team being ranked last

And for the teams in our leage the current scores would lead to this ranking (with the teams having a win pct of 100% being all ranked 1st and so on):

Rank Team Score
1 Bradford Bulls 97.1
2 Midnight Marauders 95.8
3 Torchwood Aliens 95.2
4 Letaidans 92.9
5 Black Dragons 89.4
6 Leverkusen Leopards 87.1
7 DA Raiders 84.5
8 Berinsfield Hornets 81.3
9 Orlando Hawks 75.8
10 KAFakofers 71.6
11 MK Saints 67.1
12 Burnaby Bruisers 63.9
13 Fanconian Biertrinkers 63.5
14 Trois-Rivieres Oilers 60.0
15 Paxtang Black Panthers 58.4
16 Hemet Hooligans 52.3
17 SARMIS 51.0
18 Osler Rotties 50.0
19 birney's weekenders 45.8
20 RanchBoards 45.5
21 Whatever 44.5
22 Arizona Hummingbirds 30.3
23 Rüti Doom 27.4
24 Roll Badge 2.0 25.8
25 Southern Meerkats 24.2
26 Somerton Crabs 21.3
27 Florida Gators 16.1
27 Jinonice Lions 16.1
29 Car Honks 14.5
30 Rheydter Royal Roosters 11.0
31 Richmond Romans 7.7
32 DKFernik 7.4

Let me know what you think.

Cheers
Dar

Thanks so much for engaging me on this!
I initially did not want to have all winning records be ranked at the very top because as you know that doesn't tell the whole story of how good a team is because of the strength of schedule. NFL Power rankings constantly have a team with more wins ranked lower if their strength of schedule and victory warrants it (Think of the Steelers this season, undefeated through 11 games and only ranked #1 a single week).

In order to accomplish this I used a ranked approach of the win pct with tiebreakers going to Point Differential. The problem with that is I think PD is a good stat line but the overall rank is better. So I simply switched the tiebreaker to the overall rank.

Teams will automatically have a high win pct rank if they have more wins but might end up with a better Power rank if they rank higher than any other team in the overall rank and maybe point differential if it's much stronger than anyone else. Point differential is already used as a tiebreaker for the overall rank though...
However, I decreased the weight of impact the ovr rank has on the power rank to make sure win pct. still has the strongest impact and that the PD isn't entirely ignored.

This is exactly what you want to see and I think this will reflect stronger teams better as the season goes on. While my formula isn't exactly what you have, my rankings still come out very close to yours.

I really do like your formula as it provides a cleaner look as I like the weakest teams having a score close to 0 instead of a negative number. I tweaked my original formula to display that better.

Here is my updated power rankings:

Lol wow I'm dumb. I initially plugged in your formula dar and it didn't come out right for some reason so that's why I thought it would be easier to just tweak my original formula.
But I reviewed everything closer and realized yours is much better and the scoring makes much more sense.

(Hopefully) final u p d a t e for week 6 in case you feel like anything else needs changed:

Week 6 u p d a t e 2

I tweaked the weights a little more as you will see but it's definitely more in favor of win pct as it should be and decreases the chances of score tie...

Thanks for your help! You are clearly better at math than I am!

I'm so excited that SARMIS and Birney are so close in the rankings.

You can thank Bernie's 14th overall rank for that and a bye week as well.
Once we get later in the season and teams have played the same amount of games it will reflect team strength better...

Oh no, they are eternally linked and should never be ranked anything other than equal.

Sorry, I'm newer so I must've missed some context there.

It's hilarious that you say that though because they actually were tied with a score of 45.00 until I tweaked the formula to prevent any ties lol.
