And who would control this?
Because I think that the fight is in the control of the league, not in the league itself. Clubs don't want UEFA and FIFA to control their businesses, and so they want to create their own competition. The control of money, in short. |

Because parity is not the key factor, aspiration is. Imagine a small local team setting up, lets call them the Providence Pirates. In the UK (and most if not all European football leagues), there is a possibility that through hard work, luck, whatever, that team can rise through the leagues - the promotion/relegation system - to get to the top. Teams have done it... Now over to the NFL - it's a closed shop. There's no promotion and relegation, in fact there's an incentive to be the worst - 1st Draft Pick. How would the league dynamics change if the draft did not exist, instead the teams had their own youth development structures, and the teams with the worst records got relegated? So for the NFL, I don't think the 1st draft pick is a huge incentive for more than a couple of really bad teams. Most teams in the NFL are trying to win and they have the same salary cap restrictions. Some teams have historically been better run/coached than others Patriots vs. Bengals. I don't know if your ever going to see youth development systems simply because high school and college football are so huge. Why pay for a youth system when you have college football? College football makes a ton for the colleges and universities - - and don't yet have to pay the players. Baseball & Hockey has a minor league system. Baseball has academies all over Latin American. I think the NBA might get at least one level with the developmental league. I think most pro teams put some token amount of money into youth sports leagues (probably less than what Pete was suggesting) - - but it's a smaller percentage of what they make. Parents are picking up most of it. I like promotion/demotion - - I'm a big European football fan. But sports leagues in the states are very successful without it (both financially and fan popularity). I doubt you'll see demotion in an American sports league - - you have these owners that paid up to $2 billion for their franchise, they're not going to see their investment drop to the 2nd division. Even MLS doesn't have promotion/demotion and there doesn't seem to be a strong push to add it. Steve SD Blitz |

That' s why I'm saying, if the product does entertain, the people will go for it. It would be the same in Europe.
The protests were from the hardliners, from my point of view, but the money comes from the wide 'average' fan. Funny side note, there was a voice saying the contracts are binding, so there might be a side effect when teams dropping out. Means who owns who money as compensation. |

So are all the big clubs in the Premier League owned by American billionaires, Russian oligarchs and Middle East sovereign wealth funds?

Quite a few of the teams from lower down the Premier and also the Championship as well. I'm a little bit old school and still think of the league as it used to be - divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4. |
