Since I have started my RZA career many things have changed. Jack's Guide is a very useful help for new starters and I recommend every new manager to read it, but I believe some assumptions may need some adjustment. That's why I have founded a new franchise, the Sydney Rising Stars, with the support of Pete at the beginning of season 43.
In this forum thread I would like to set the target of the project and want to discribe as a kind of a journal, how an experieced RZA player sets up a new team to give some more guidance to our rookie managers.

The main goal is to set a very good financial basis, but also to build a team, that is competitive, when being promoted to League 1 in the second season. As the mid term perspective the franchise should be structured to be capable to play at Elite level on a long run.

My intend it to document my key activities over the next two seasons, give some background information on tough decissions and also to recap, how the strategy works.

If someone else wants to put a comment on what I have written, which would be useful for other managers, please feel free to do so. But please think twice before you post in this thread, we can open another one in the discussions section for general comments.

Day 1
The Rising Stars have been founded in the Claymores region. The first important decission. The options were to start in a league, which is mainly filled with bots receiving 25 Mio. of bonus money or playing playing in mainly human managed league with no extra money. For sure it is more fun to play a human opponent. But from a team development perspective, it is better option from my point of view to take the money and play the bots. You will be able to win more games and generate more income this way, you should be able to draft better players as the bots are randomly picking and you have more time to get your team ready as there are basically no useful players on the initial roster. The downside is, you will be having very few competitive games to start building your playbooks, but this can be dealt with by playing friendlies against teams at a comparable level.

As a new RZA manager has no indication about the strength of a region at Elite and League 1 level, the second deciding factor should be the kickoff time of the league games in the region to be able to watch them frequently.

Initial activities in the game:
1) Finished the tutorial for the manager license to gain the extra money.

2) Scheduled away friendly games against opponents with a reasonable stadium size (ideally close to the maximum of 144.300)
The strength of the opponent is currently not important as there is no negative impact, when getting smashed in a friendly game. The key factors are the extra income and the experience gain of the players for each snap in the game.

3) Front office -> Staff:
Hired the level 20 Scout (you will need it to evaluate the draftees and new players) and the public relations manager to boast the income.
Medical staff isn't required at the moment and facility manager isn't important from my point of view.

4) Front office -> Sponsors:
Selected the sponsor with the lowest base payment and the highest bonus for wins as I expect many of them against the bot teams.

5) Front office -> Stadium:
I used the 25 Mio. start bonus in the bot league to fully build both stadium areas at the end zones.

6) Front office -> Fanshop:
And I have build the fan shop.

7) Front office -> Facilities:
It may be a bit early, but I have started the construction of wind tunnel and video room, which are the best facilities at the beginning as they can be basically used for all players.

Day 2
1) Team -> Draft Board
I have downloaded the draft class and analysed it in Excel. We are drafting on position 14 in the middle of the draft tonight. I focused for the first round on 10 rookies with speed, strength and intelligence levels, which I would expect for their positions and set the draft orders. There are two outstanding players. I expect the first to be picked by the other human team and hope that the second one won't be picked randomly by a bot team.

2) I had a brief look at the initial roster and automatically set the depth chart for the first two friendlies. Additionally I checked the game plan and set the standard tactics for the friendlies.
Look at the schedule, if you joined mid season you'll potentially be playing Supercup away games vs bots. Switch the venue to be the home team in those games. This will increase your ticket income in a big way.

3) Team -> Training
As there will be the first training tonight, I have set the training for the initial roster to train 90% Speed / Strength to find the physical caps of the players. In case both are already red capped I trained Agility. The other 10% are either used on Positioning or Vision. The aim is to identify the physical caps as quickly as possible to find the few players, that may have a chance to stay on the roster mid term.

Day 3
The day started with our first drafted player arriving on the team. Please welcome Elliott Meunier our new starting MLB.
The number 1 on board went as expected to the Streamers (another project team). We had been lucky that our No. 2 passed thru to pick 14 and even more that his strength is uncapped. So we a fantastic player on the team with Speed 50, Strength at least 45.8, Intelligence 50 and a fearsome trait.

I have also to admit my first mistake. I was expecting basically a bot draft, but there were also 7 other human teams, which were promoted to League 1. Sorry, guys.

1) Front Office -> Stadium
Additionally we had been fortunate to take over the team after season rollover and received the 14 Mio. mediacenter early bird bonus today. I will use this to further extend the stadium and build the main stand to maximum capacity as we won't have a game at home during the next 4 days, when the construction will take place.

2) Mails -> Team Box
I have checked the training report for players, which have hit the yellow cap on Strength or Speed and will switch the training for these, if the other physical is still uncapped.
This will be repeated after every training update

3) Team -Youth Pull
I have chosen the youngest player, a 16 year old one, and invited him to my youth academy. After every weekly u p d a t e I will invite the youngest player into the academy.

4) Team - Transfer Market
I have started checking the transfer market. I will be trying to fill the youth academy quickly. Mainly with 16-18 years olds, which can be bought for not much more than 10.000. Additially I am planning to replace the initial roster with better players. The aim is to have about 25 competitive players at season end. I have used the search criteria:
Age up to 26 years
Inteligence and Teamwork 30 and above

Day 5
Two more player arrived from the draft. A 20 year old very intelligent and speedy LB and a 19 year old DE with fantastic physicals. Unfortunately both are low on teamwork. With the lack of a really interesting QB on the draft board, which would have been the number one choice, we got more out of the draft than expected.
Surprisingly we got the number 4 & 8 from our inital top 10 list in round 2 & 3. While I didn't want to make a gamble on non-capped physicals in the first draft, the Streamers took a different approach picking the best available double trait players on the board.

Tomorrow we will be having our first league game againt a team, which went bot recently and still has many quality players on their roster. I have no clue, how it will end up. Let's see...

1) Team -> Depth Chart
I have set up a first basic depth chart based on some simple rules:
- Drafted players on their trained position
- Best available player on QB (there was one with 3* rating on the roster)
- Strongest players on OL/DL (more intelligent one's on OL).
- Best trained players on the remaining positions (the intelligent one's preferred on defense)

2) Team -> Players
Reduced the roster to the minimum size of 38 players. Mainly the players with low intelligence, talent and teamwork got fire. Whenever a new player will join the team, another player from the inital roster will be released.

3) Team -> Playbook
Some minor tweaks have been done to the playbooks. I am intending to play a 3-4-4 defense with limited blitzing as the base formation. In the redzone a 4-4-3 will be used and a 5-3-3 on goalline situations.

4) Games -> Games
I took the decision to prefer pass on 1st and 2nd down and to mainly pass on third down as I expect my OL to be too weak to establish the running game.
There is no need for game specific settings at the moment, so I will use these settings for all games as the default.

Day 7
We have won our first league game in an unexpected easy way 58-3 yesterday. Offense and defense worked both pretty well, but the man of the match was our 2 round pick with 3 defense touchdowns.
Team rating: 51.0%

Building the stadium directly, when the money was available, was a mistake. I should have build it on day 4 or 5, so that the construction finishes straight after the financial u p d a t e and prior to our first homefield match. This would have saved us 300.000 on weekly maintenance.

We have bought the first set of new starters on the transfer market:
24 year old RB for 500.000 @ 100.000 salary (his salary is a bit high and he could be trained a bit more balanced)
22 year old TE for 500.001 @ 43.000 salary (good physicals, but he still needs much training on his skills)
26 year old CB for 1.000.000 @ 120.000 salary (perhaps a bit expensive, but already well trained)
25 year old LB for 500.010 @ 50.000 salary (his training and intelligence are a bit low, but he will be an exceptional pass rusher)

I know, it is pretty early to buy such players, but I am trying to be quite aggressive in the team build and will do things as early as possible.
My aim is not to have most money in the bank. It is to build a solid financial stock, but more importantly to build a competitive team quickly.
If you are more patient, you can make huge money in the first seasons. My intent was always not to overspend on the transfer market and on salaries.
If you follow these rules, which I will exlain a bit more in detail, you can have a top team without overspending and the need of a huge bank account.

One more remark, I have build already 3/4 of the stadium and plan to build the last stand within the next 10 days. Don't buy players at these prices and salaries earlier.

Day 9
We played our first Supercup game against a previous seasons Elite team. It ended up with 13-51 loss, but a pretty good performance of the team. Generally the main problem against these superior teams seems to establish the own running game and to stop it at the other side, because you are loosing nearly all battles at the lines. So we will stick to our plan with a pass heavy offense until we have improved our offensive line.

We had another new arrival on the team
23 year old FB for 51.001 @ 15.000 salary (a cheap good guy, who just needs training)

1) Front office -> Facilities
The construction of the video room and the wind tunnel finished, so I activated both facilities to boost the next training.

2) Front office -> Coaches
I am intending to hire the first coaches. I am looking for a headcoach, which needs to be hired first and one assistent coach to speed up the training progress of the team. I am looking coaches younger than 50 years with approx. 80 coaching points and a reasonable consistency of minimum 3.5 stars.

Many other managers would say it is to early to hire coaches already and it is more adviseable to save some more money on the bank account. But I want to ramp up as quickly as possible without overspending and we have already a bunch of players, that will benifit from better training

Day 10
The second league game was played. An easy 100-0 win against a bot. In the future I won't mention these games anymore.

Please welcome our new headcoach. We were able to recruit a 46 year old coach with 80 coaching points, 2.5 stars experience and 4 stars consistency.
His salary is below 300.000.
The intend is to hire a similar assistent coach prior to the next training update.

1) Front Office -> Economy
Please ensure, you check your financial situation frequently. Our franchise is having a regular income of roughly 3.000.000 per financal u p d a t e this season. Currently we have fixed expenditure of about 1.300.000, so there is still enough cap to be used. From my point of view it is fine to raise it up to the 3.000.000, so that you don't loose money in weeks without ticket income. The ticket income should build up the bank account and can partially be used for further investments.

2) Team -> Youth academy
The academy is slowly filling. Currently there are 6 players (2 from the youth pull and 4 bought for little money on the transfer market). Due to the head coach we are having some more training points to spend. Normally I will use them on the oldest players, who needs them most.

Day 11
Another player got hired today:
25 year old QB for 168.025 @ 14.000 salary (he has good intelligence and speed, but unfortunately is very poor on talent and experience)

I have bought this guy, as I expect it to be the biggest challenge to find a franchise QB. He probably won't be good enough for a League 1 starter spot, but may be a cheap solution for a long term backup.

1) Front Office -> Stadium
There were 20 Million on the bank account and 4 days until we play the next game at home, so I started the final build of the stadium and did also a repair of the stadium (normally I intend to do this after every third home field game, when the stadium is down to 94%).

Day 12
We managed to sign our first assistent coach. A 34 year old LB coach with 76 coaching points, very high consistency and a reasonable salary of 120.000.

Ideally I want to have one AC with the same or at least similar coaching points as the HC. I will be going with just one higher CP assistent coach.
The choice for me is LB, DL or OL. All effect the gameplay of multiple players on the field. OL and DL have the advantage to be normally a bit cheaper and they can train 20 players on the normal roster.
The LB coach can deal only with 16 players, but seems to support some more skills. I prefer LB or DL, because they support tackling training.

1) Team -> Youth Academy
All players got switched to LB to participate from the better training of the AC.

2) Team -> Players
All players get switched to LB as well until they reach the end of the free position change period.
