Hello Everyone!
I'm excited to introduce a brand-new power rankings system. This will capture yards allowed for defense ratings and opponent's records for strength of schedule. The 1st week is a little odd since there were several bot games and even 2 games where bots played each other and since those games don't record stats, it makes for a bit of a wildcard stat line (I highlighted those teams in orange). Anyway, things will shake out in a few weeks and we'll hopefully get a better picture of the league. Here are the power rankings, enjoy! Thanks for doing this. There is not really a good way to start this with all teams even judged at the start, but I think in 2 to 3 weeks the rankings will become better.

Week 2 Power Rankings are released!
Monarchs 1 - Week 2 Power Rankings It's still not very representative of the state of the league. Having 10 bots in the league is skewing the data. I have a question about that. I wonder if it would be best to increase the weight of the strength of schedule to be greater than point differential. It would seem that PD doesn't reflect your strength very well if you are playing inferior teams. Right now PD is weighted at 11% and SoS at 6%. Wondering if I should reverse that. Thoughts? Schedule Strength should be the highest weight of "stats" for a league like this in my opinion. Gaining a ton of yards and winning by 100 against bots or new teams should count for nothing. And that probably shouldn't just be W/L record either, should be referencing the power rankings themselves.

The Bots shouldn't even be in the power rankings list, and SoS combined with PD should be the majority of the formula. Bots, regardless of their record, should carry zero weight in any SoS formula, with even the worst human team significantly heavier. In-game stats should be a much smaller portion of the rankings formula and less consequential, both because of opponent and because teams have different strategies. |

Just to say it, with that many BOTs, most teams will play enough BOTs to average a major part of the advantages out.
1 or 2 BOTs would be much more severe, since this one would only play 1/3 of the league and that would shift a lot. Now likely all will play 4 to 6 BOT games. But those kind of games are always a problem. You could put all BOTs at 32, regardless the real listing and a game against them would be a big game where a human team is big time favorite. Or you ignore them completely, but that might lead to stat problems, since you have substract those stats. Honestly, I like it as it is, you can play around with the weights, but my guess is, you get other advantages / disadvantages weighted higher or lower by that, so the result might become a little better, but never perfect. |

As much as I'd like to, I don't think ignoring bots completely would be good as it creates a ripple effect in the data that's hard to reconcile. Jack I think you are right in that eventually we'll all play enough bots that it'll even out eventually. I think I do want to increase the SoS weight as that'll help with reflecting bots and weaker teams. Especially the deeper we get into the season. Better to do that now than in week 12... EDIT: Updated the week 2 rankings with the new weights. It already is looking a lot better to me. Looking forward to seeing how it will shake out in a few weeks! Monarchs 1 - Week 3 - Power Rankings Still a lot of movement so things are still shaking out but only 6 unbeaten teams remain. It'll be interesting to see how much this changes over the next few weeks! |
