So how bad is this heat wave in Europe?
News is reporting on it every day in the states - - but it doesn't seem like the temperatures are that hot in absolute terms, just a lot hotter than what people are used to in the higher latitudes. Steve SD Blitz |

It's a combination of
- it's hotter, most regions do register record temperatures, most of the time those are > 40°C or > 104°F - in many regions it's much earlier hot than in the past, so the fear is there it will get even hotter and for a longer time - in many regions there is a long dry period running, which does have several bad side effects, like dry ground, easy combustions in woods and fields, low drink water supply That all under corona conditions and the higher energy costs. I think in many regions it's just bad news on bad news on bad news with no end in sight. Some fires are really catastrophic, but most of the time it's more the wide spread amount of fires. And regions like Spain and Portugal, which know heat and dry periods, still do register a lot of dead people, much more than in recent years, based on heat. Compared to covid-19 death rate it's not a high figure, still a lot more than usual. As said, bad news on bad news on bad news. |

Yeah...I live in California and we have wild fires often.
Do most home in middle to northern Europe have A/C? When I was in Spain 15-20 years ago, even the hotel in Andalusia didn't have air conditioning. Americans just wilt in the heat...

Maybe in San Diego ... not in the desert of Iraq or the jungles of Guadalcanal, not in the Texas oilfields or the rice paddies of Vietnam. Maybe that's true in San Diego or California in general. |

Steve SD Blitz No, most homes don't have A/C, since electricity is quite expensive and those stuff needs alot. Companies, especially bigger ones, get more more. Private homes also, but more the 'better suited' ones. Likely it will change, if such heat waves do come more often. |
