To have a little more interaction in Fan Shop sales, my suggestion is to formulate a "marketing strategy". It would not be terribly overcomplicated, or take too much time, but you would assign 5 or 6 players to your strategy. Presumably the best players on your team statistically by position. Those players would be featured on the t-shirts and game play jerseys. Rather than just footballs, you have autographed balls. The calendars feature those players as well and so on. Just as real teams don't try and market every player on their roster.

The better your chosen players are statistically in the league your team competes in, the more your Fan Shop sales are then modifed. These stats are already currently collected as the season progresses.

Since you are only competing with the players in your given league, it levels the playing field. D2 managers, while there is a D2, would not compete against players in Elite for example.

This creates the potential for some tough decisions too. For example, say you don't have a terribly competitive team in your league, but you have a decent QB. If you want to increase your sales, you need to pad your QB's stats, which makes you more predictable in game situations. At the same time, a QB on a less competitive team should not earn more than a QB on a perennial winning team.

A statistic could even be added to player's profiles. "Marketability" could give each player a rating that is partially based on team ticket sales or ELO ranking since the more successful a team is, the more likely people will want to buy that player's gear. The current and historical ranking of the player within the team's league should also factor in. This would be another great statistic to increase your veteran player's value in the transfer market too. Since most highly marketable players would only be sold in times of financial crisis, the stat would likely influence the amount of the winning bid.

This change would not create a lot of work for managers, but would definitely make the fan shop something more than a "set it and forget it" routine. You may need to revisit the strategy a few times throughout the season to ensure you have maximum earning potential. For fun, you could also have a top 100 marketable players currently and all time, based on the modified income each player brings to the team.

If the fear is that there is too much money in the game, lower the base income that you get with no strategy in place. The marketing strategy would only modify the amount collected for fan shop sales.

My suggestion is based on stats that are already being collected, creates more opportunities for us to manage the team rather than just coach the team, and in my mind, should not create any imbalances in the game that don't already exist. Established teams will still outperform new managers. Good teams will still outperform bad teams.

It's a very nice idea. With at most one danger - that playing with marketing strategy will have the potential to become a game within the game
