So I heard in Germany there was movement to boycott the World Cup in Qatar and there was less support/merchandising for the German NT because of that. Hard to believe because Europe is so soccer crazy - - is this a significant thing?

There is a lot of news in the states about the issues with Qatar - - but not much about boycotting the games. Of course, the US has two large military bases there - - but I'm not sure it's that or Americans just aren't that into soccer as much.

It seems, it is not clear by now.

Many of my friends stated they would not join the matches on TV, and therefore somehow boycott the games. A few others said the wouldnt care and run their "business" as usual. I know some cities are staying away from managing public viewings to express their opinion. Some businesses like bars said the would not broadcast the matches.

It seems, most tier 1 politicians stay away from visiting the team in Qatar, as well.

We will see.

on top it seems, many poeple here to not get why they should save energy at home, while a desert becomes air-cooled. Because of the Russian war in Ukraine, energy became so expensive, people express their sorrows. And Fifas Infantili and those Qatar officials are contributing to the people disliking this world cup.

Steve, i watched the opening ceremony and the game between Qatar vs Ecuador, and the romanian commentators said nothing about that. The Qatar nation was very welcoming and Morgan Freeman was in the opening ceremony, live in person, on the field.
The main thing that is considered for 12 years is that the Qatar members bribed FIFA so that Qatar will host the World Cup (wich i don't believe).
Yeah, i don't understand why you consider that. At every USA soccer game the stadium is packed. And don't forget that USA will play against Wales tomorrow in Group B. Let's see how many fans will come to the game.

The Qatar Nation may have been welcoming, but I just read about the opening match that half the seats were empty after halftime and at the end there were nearly no spectators in the stadium. Was that visible in the broadcast?

I think a lot of the issues that people were upset with the treatment of gay people in Qatar and the treatment of migrant workers.

So you don't think bribery was involved in getting the World Cup in Qatar?

It seems like FIFA was so corrupt under Sepp Blatter that its safe to assume that most of it's decision were a result of corruption and bribery.

Soccer is popular in the states and there are a lot of American soccer fans (in part because the US is a big country). But in comparison to other sports, its way behind football, stock car racing, basketball etc. Will the US NT get World Cup coverage - - yes. But it will be totally dwarfed by NFL and college football coverage because those sports are in peak season.

it has been proven that bribery has been involved to get the World Cup to Quatar. Probably at least the last 5 World Cups have been influenced by bribery.

It has been proven that the selection of Germany for WC 2006 was also gained by helpful payments.

The Fifa guys are one the most corrupt group of grumpy old men you can find on earth

No bribery at FIFA. That made my day.

Main problems with Quatar are
- bribery to get the cup
- many deaths while building the stadiums and basically a slavery system for the workers
- queer people criminalized
- women rights

On top comes, winter games in a land with no foorball tradition, the energy stuff, and so on and so on.

But, me personal, not watching world cups since ages, so again this time, no watching.

There is a lot of voices calling for this Qatari WC boycott.
Personally, ask me to boycott something, and I want to do the opposite.
Of course Qatari regime is NOK. Of course climatizing stadium in the desert is NOK. Of course 6500 death on the stadium construction sites are NOK.

But let's be honnest, if Qatar was not an arabic country, there would be way less call for boycott. And if we boycott Qatar, why did not we boycott Russia in 2018 while thay already invade part of Ukraine and Georgia? Why are we not boycotting more Chinese events? Why are we even buying all the products manufactured in China?

The truth is, the loudest voice asking to boycott the WC do not even like soccer. They are also the same claiming the players do not deserve their paycheck. There is a lot of hypocrisy in this debate imo.

People just love to tell others what to do nor not. They better mind their own business and really act to change things. Boycotting or call for a boycott never changed anythind.
