TBH, the number one reason to blame somebody is the behavior of FIFA itself. I was listening to a longer interview yesterday, with Jens Weinreich. He is a German journalist with quite good knowledge about sport and soccer, especially FIFA and UEFA. The major problem according to him is that FIFA is a monopol of soccer by international law, with their own justice and rules, by international law. The construct is almost untouchable. I can understand why this causes corruption and decisions people do not support, and I understand those who call for boycott.

The major problem is not Qatar in my opinion, even it seems to be governed by a bunch of suckers. Qatar is just the peek of the FIFA corruption pyramid.

Lets focus on FIFA first

Depends on where the boycott is coming from. The ticket-buying public does not move the needle much, but corporate sponsors do. Just ask Dan Snyder and the Washington Redskins...er....Commanders. The way A-B distillers got screwed by the last minute change on beer sales could cause some corporate sponsors to balk at another Muslim country hosting

I also disagree, the end consumer has enormous power, if he speaks with one voice

The Europeans might remember the Brent Spar a huge raw oil tank for a platform in the North Sea which became obsolete after the platform was connected to a pipeline.

Shell planned to just sink the tank at an very deep position of the North Sea and apparently they had every right to do that. However the public outcry was leading to nobody buying any gas at a Shell station and Shell quickly decided to change their plans and do a more environmentally friendly disposal of the tank

The Shell example is 27 years old. The world is not the same anymore. Internet did not even exist by then. At this time, a boycott call was exceptional. Today, you have a new one every week.

Clearly I agree with ptdoc. Only the companies have the power to make major changes with a boycott strategy.

Off-topic: I was using the internet by myself for the first time in 1992. And the internet is much older.

Tim Berners Lee was one of the inventors of the technical foundation of the world wide web in 1989, as example. This is what a majority of non-nerdy people sometimes confuse with "The Internet".

The internet itself, the technical platform for all those technical protocols like http, ftp, smtp and so on, was invented during the 60s, and became a thing in 1969. At that time it was called ARPANET, which is why we still refer to ARPA in DNS zonefiles today, as example. /Off-topic

The the TCP/IP protocols (the Internet) are from ~1969. Hard to believe, it's older than me!

Actually, one of the first nodes was in Boelter Hall at UCLA - - where I failed a number of math and engineering classes. :-(
