Definitely right to train physicals first. In fact no point in training other skills heavily until you see the physicals and decide who to keep, who to chuck. You could even get rid of a few players from your squad.
My squad is now down to 52. Those with the most expensive salaries will get booted at the end of season. I will have two coming up from the YA plus 3 draft picks. So looking at possibly 5 that I can release at EOS. Once I get my bank balance to look healthier I will be able to be a bit more choosy but right now it's a case of the cheapest player stays and gets fitted to where they are needed. I will really be managing my finances ahead of everything else. I can still run a reasonably competitive team and am taking time to build them back to what they were before I almost went bankrupt. |

Even it might have an impact on the overall performance, I suggest to set a limit on the skills to train to and KEEP that.
I did some chopping and rebuilding in the past few seasons, looking for a healthy bank account in the season, not overall. Sure you can overspend in a season or even a few one, but not for ever, so having a healthy one per season makes life (at least for me) easier, since it means you don't get into trouble. I started with a skill cap at level 41 for the matured players, means, passing, agility, tackling you name it, all were trained to 41 and then no further. I had all my starter on 41 as some point and a lot of backups also. I looked at the wage numbers in total and had a big plus at the end of the season. I did then, after 1-2 seasons under that condition, boost to level 42. Looked again on the numbers and they were still healthy. Peter did also put that wage-decline on 30+ age players in place and that did help a lot to cut some wage, so end of last season I did decide to go to level 43 and I'm still healthy, but it will likely depend on the season results. As rule of thumb you can say, coaches and players together > 6 million will bring you long time into trouble. It's not a hard barrier, it depends of course on several other factors, how you manage your team and your finances, what media center give you and so on, but as guideline it is the ball park you should aim for, or better, stay under this barrier and you are OK. With enough ressources as backup you can overspend heavily for a few seasons, but in that case you better know what you do and have time to manage this. Me, I like the method I call revolver, so having a replacement same spec available once the guy before retires. But that means I need a quite deep roster. If you overspend, at some point you need to cut A LOT of players and then you have a rebuilding, different approach. Long answer short, I suggest to set a limit and then mature the roster, learn the game and then, once you know the tools, decide further actions. |

Just to follow up on what 'the other Jack' said (yes, there are two of us!) I have had to put in emergency measures to keep me afloat financially. Coincidentally one thing I have done is to limit my non-physical skill training to 40 (some of the older players are historically above this). I will then be doing as Jack6 says and 'creeping' my skill levels up - 41, 42 as far as is financially manageable.
I also look at my overall salary per player and any that are or are likely to be $200,000 plus I look at very carefully and am putting in place players to replace them. (Some of the replacements are not ideal but c'est la vie). It is better to be 90% successful every season than to be 100% successful this season and bankrupt next. (That sentence is almost worthy of Confucius!) 2 seasons ago I did not have enough money to contribute to the Mediacentre. Last season it was only about 30M. This season I just about got to 50M but not all at the start. Now my current bank balance is 60M and I will definitely be able to put in 50M at the start of the new season. So as Jack6 says go slowly, learn gradually and as this Jack (me) says Don't spend money unless you have to and even then think twice, or maybe three times before doing so. |

NB my coach plus player wage bill is now just over 4M whereas a few sesons ago it was about 7.5M

I think the main thing you should keep in mind if you go shopping in the Transfer Market, look at the estimated wage of the player and his skills.
If they are above the self set limits, simply don't buy them. If they are, give yourself a limit on the bid and don't break this rule also. The transfer market can give you quite cheap and good players, but you have to be patient. If you are not, it's a tool to mess up the team. |

Imo the draft players are not going to make that huge difference. They will certainly help improve your team but not be the magic answer to becoming a superstar. This game does take time and patience.
One other thing to do is look for the weekly Youth Pull. At the beginning this is a good (and cheap) way to build your team. You can find some gems in there. At the start you may need them to fill out your team but also put some into the Youth Academy that you can train up over the coming seasons. The YA has 10 slots to start so finding two players at each age - 20, 19 etc means that you will have 2 new players each season (plus you get to train the 16 yr olds for 45 seasons) + 3 from the draft. |
