It was not my intention to "open the melon" (catalan expression) again.
Without touching the Regular Season games, would it be easy to establish the simple joint classification by Conference as the main one? The 6 teams with the best balances would play the PO's. The first two free and the other 4 would play the Wild Cards. And the relegations for the teams with the worst balance and whatever universe (random). |

And if any change is impossible to make the Elite division a little fairer, then there should be the possibility of giving up moving up.
I think this would not be technically difficult to implement. |

That sounds like you don't want to obey to the rule 'every team relegates to the same region it did come from'.
You need a concept that does obey this, since otherwise the D1-teams can't promote as in the past, both conference champs. |

This rule must be broken (or changed) to make Elite more "fair".
It wouldn't be a tragedy if a Dragons champion was relegated to the Thunder. What would be the problem? |

If the problem is the game time... Every year we change the time twice (in Europe at least) and I don't see people being very traumatized by it.

But you're overlooking the fact that not all schedules are created equal. Is a team that finished third in a division at 12-4 or whatever necessarily better than a team that finished second in a division that went 8-8? Probably, but the schedule could have played a significant role. And these suggestions are aimed at fixing a "problem" that occurs maybe once every five or seasons (I'm too lazy to check). Don't see it as a real problem |

With the current system I only see one suggestion to be possible and fitting.
Play a relegation game between the 3rd place of a division against the bowl loser of the linked region. Winner gets the Elite spot, loser the D1-spot. Playable on Sat before rollover. But that was shot down seasons ago. Switching region is not everybodies preference, so doing as it was suggested could open up other problems. By default a 3rd place team can only make the playoffs as 6th seat team and if I remember right, no 6th seat team ever won the championship. So this is so far only an acadamical discussion. OrangeCrush won as 5th seat in season 33, 35 and 36. Home Melones in 42, Peoples Republic of Yorkshire in 52 and also Sydney Sea Eagles in 54. Seems like 6th place teams do have a tough road ahead, which was so far too tough. |

to make Elite more "fair". A sidenote on this one: Elite was not made to make Elite fair. It was made to move a certain level of teams out of the regular league tree. And Jack is right. We need to keep the mechanics that allow for a fair promotion from D1. If an Elite team gets annoyed by this, I can deal much better with that situation than not maintaining regional origins, or "promote bort Super Bowl teams to Elite". This might sound harsh, but it is not. Every single season we have 16 teams that are guaranteed to enter Elite. So we need 16 teams to kick out of Elite. Division by division to their region of origin. Even if the relegating team was the super bowl winner of Elite, I find it fair. It did not good enough during the regular season. And this is what it comes down to: just play your regular season good enough to avoid relegation. Postseason is a bonus in this regards. |
