Hi all,
so, I tried to get smart about my Depth Chart for competitive games, epecially when I have an absolutely clear No. 1 as well as No. 2 guy at a position (in classical fashion, mainly QB). The idea was that I wanted my starter to go for it every snap if possible, so I naturally checked "1st string" for him in the chart. But then, I also have a replacement guy who is clearly better than my 3rd option, and I wanted to be sure that he'd be the one to replace the starter in case of injury, in a way faking a 3-level substitution hierarchy. The way I tried to do this was setting 1st string for the "deputy" as well, while also checking the "no substitutions" box for QB in the game settings, thinking that this would also apply within the pool of 1st stringers, i.e. the engine would always pick the starter, regardless of there being other players listed with "1st string". This doesn't seem to be what happened though: The result was that the 2 1st stringers played roughly the same number of snaps, apparently by normal energy level substitution rules. Does anyone know if this can be done (and what I have to look out for to manage it) or if I should just reserve the "1st string" checkbox for the clear starter and just rely on list position for the replacement guys? Thanks in advance ![]() Last edited on 2026-03-17 11:57:45 by Octobear |

1st string is for only the 1st string.
If you put multipe players on that list, like the line, the 1st stringers build their own little group and they will act inside that group according the sub rules. I basically never use that 1st stringer option, but that's just me. If you want your 1st stringer to play the whole game, make him 1st string or just have him singled on the depth chart. If you want a sub behind him, just put him there, with no 1st string. He should be only put in in case of injury. In case of an injury and you have even that 3rd guy on the depth chart, he should only come in, if 1st stringer is injured and the 2nd guy is down on his energy level, which you can adjust in the settings. That means, the chances of the 3rd guy coming in are quite slim, but not zero. And be aware, if you setup for example a depth chart of say 50 guys and on purpose that position with just 1 guy, the engine might fill up that position with 1 or 2 more guys to fill to 55. But as long as you have 55 players on the depth chart, nobody would be put on that position by the engine prior the game. IN the game, in case of an injury and you did only define 1 guy on a certain position, the engine would pick any guy from any position to play on THAT position, since no 2nd in line was defined. So be aware of that, too. |
