Nice...native english speakers have different ways to talk the language...how a non native should learn..

British English is quite different to American English - unfortunately, with the influence of American TV shows and the internet, we have a generation here who are starting to sound like Americans..... oh the shame of it!

Such as 'you guys' to refer to groups of people who are not all male, cakes are becoming muffins......

Can tell for myself...

In school we used "Standard Oxford english"...including the different "sound"...But then, while using english for business, you dip more and more into the american style...saying color instead colour, optimize instead optimise and so on. Even the spell checker is telling me "optimize"...

I have lot's of contacts in China, Israel and western europe, and except the UK all are using that american "slang"...

by this, it is getting worse...especially if two non-natives speak together

NO..at the weekend means, this weekend. on the weekend is past tense..
"we where defeated on the weekend" is better...

At the weekend can mean both last weekend and next weekend.

I have never heard someone use 'on the weekend' in England..... it is simply not British English.

at weekend or on weekend, not too much difference. but most say on the weekend here down under.
well if you dont say on the weekend in britain, all i can say chap is its just not cricket!

And neither was your lot's performance in the last Ashes series

I guess I'm a bit of a stereotypical Pom, warm beer, fish and chips and a spot of cricket on a saturday afternoon.... spiffing old chap!

Well now...i guess your lot did put up rather a sporting fight indeed, and the bowlers really outdid themselves. I do have to say that our team was in tatters yet hardly composed themselves..
can hardly argue with you there dear livingston, but i must say drinking warm beer on any day can certainly keep the poms from whinging...toodaloo.
