Jack's example is to put a hall of fame coach on display and show that this is how it can be done.

While I like the idea of coach's having a rating for all types of positions.. the Bill Belichick is more of an exception and not the rule... especially in 2011. While you have a point that in years previous even up til the late 90's it was more common for coach's to cross-over, I'd argue that in this day n age with the complexity of the game and the sheer amount of specialists involved in every aspect the days of coach's going from one drastic end of the spectrum to the other are pretty much over.

The one shinning example of that in today's game is the DC for the Eagles who was the team's OL coach for over a decade. It was a gamble on Philly's part and many would say he is in over his head.

But to each his own... nothings saying there cant be coach's who are more adept at a multide of facets of the game.. and if you want to hire one coach to do more duties thats on the individual manager I guess. I'm just asking that the coaching attributes dont end up as across the board as the players to this point.

All i wanted to state was:

Don't put limits where limits are not needed.
Why no keep it open and the managers have to put the coaches on the positions they think they are best in.

The managers will make errors, yes, but personally I don't want a managing game where I only have a choice putting a DL rookie coach on the DL and that's it. Then the engine can play the game all by itself.

And by the way:

John Harbaugh developmend:
Western Michigan University
(Running backs coach)
(Outside linebackers coach)
University of Pittsburgh
(Tight ends coach)
Morehead State
(Special teams coach)
(Secondary coach)
University of Cincinnati
(Special teams coordinator)
Indiana University
(Special teams coordinator)
(Defensive backs coach)
Philadelphia Eagles
(Special teams coordinator)
(Defensive backs coach)
Baltimore Ravens
(Head coach)

There are few newer/younger Headcoaches in the NFL.

I don't want to say coaches do this all the time, only to show that it still happens!

The more I think about this, the more I'd like to see this feature operate like facilities and not like staff.

Facilities require some decision making, because you can only have two of them active. This forces some decisions (always good in a management game to have decisions with consequences ).

Contrast that to our coaching staff. No decision there, just hire all five of them (once you can afford it). No brainer.

Maybe simpler than 8 position coaches would be just to have an Offensive (OC) and a Defensive coordinator DC).

OC comes in 3 flavors (percentages just suggestions):

Balanced OC: +2% to all plays; 1-time hit to Team Chemistry of 10%.
Passing OC: +5% to all pass plays; -3% to running plays; 1-time hit to TC of 15%
Running OC: +5% to all running plays; -3% to all passing plays; 1-time hit to TC of 15%

Bal DC: same impact
Pass DC: same impact
Run DC: same impact

This has the benefit of being simple, while still giving managers interesting decisions.

@Jack... You can throw out the college coaching experience in my book. That game is all about recruiting and the sheer number of teams means coaches have plenty of time to cross-over and learn the trade. When a Mike Martz becomes a DC or a Rex Ryan becomes a OC... I'll definitely back the parody of coaching disciplines.

@Lee... I think you kinda taking a step backwards in terms of what most of us are thinking in regards to coaching staff. I think we are asking for more flexibility in terms of what a coach brings to the table instead of generic hits. Thats why we are pushing for actual coaching attribute stats that would in more detail tell you if that coach would be a +/- in a particular area of offense.
