DL and OL are 3-5 each on the field, and you wont have that many good players for those positions, this is why I did not care about Dont know if this makes any sense on the other hand, by getting a DL/OL coach you boost about 8 players, instead of about 2 when going for the QB. |

I agree, but for me it makes AC's for TE,ST,FB almost needless, because these positions can be covered by 4-6 players in total |

CB (pass game just not that critical yet) MLB (not sure he's getting more than a few tackle opportunities) After those two I worry about the LB, (particularly MLB as he is the captain who helps recognize plays for the defense) I drafted a real smart guy (50 Int) and made him my MLB. While I think we'll never know about the play recognition, there are some astonishing stats: He makes about half of the tackles my DLine makes. He makes about as much tackles as my CBs. But: He makes by far the most interceptions! And when you look in the Hall of Fame for all teams in season 2, you'll find only LBs on the top. My guess: only MLBs. (A little extra: 11 of 14 Ints my MLB made were returned for TDs) Still I'm not quite sure, what to make of it: Maybe it's because the people are tending to play short passes over the middle. Maybe it's because many people put their best players to MLB and not to CB. |

Maybe it's because many people put their best players to MLB and not to CB. The field CB OLB MLB OLB CB On an even pass distribution each of them gets 20% of the interceptions. This means 60% for LB, and 40% for CB. Maybe this is another reason for having LB on top |

Are they ever involved in pass coverage or only after the catch is made? Seems like in real football, CB are doing most of the pass coverage with safeties provide deep help and LBs provide underneath coverage. Usually, Cornerbacks and Safeties get most of the picks, but perhaps that's because a lot of linebackers don't have very good hands. Steve SD Blitz |

Steve SD Blitz CBs and LBs have a better shot for the INT, because most passes are within their range. SF are backups, as you pointed out. But of course they are able to catch INTs as well |

When I think of the field like you suppose
CB OLB MLB OLB CB (1)(2) (3) (4)(5) is it correct, that the players are covering more than one field? So the MLB is not only covering (3) but (2),(3),(4)? And when I think of depth, he covers, let's call it: (2a), (2b), (3a), (3b) and so on? |

And when I think of depth, he covers, let's call it: (2a), (2b), (3a), (3b) and so on? We have a "strict zone offense", no man coverage. But yes, the zones are "extendable", the player does it by itself. It is better to explain in the DB mayb you have CBR FSR SSL CBL on field. The rusher goes "through" the OLBR. Now both the FSR and the SSL try to tackle him, the speed and vision plays its role here. So basically, your LB is covering each single zone on the field, but if he has a shot for the tackle is determined by the distance between his original spot on the field and the route of the attacker. |

As opposed to the LBs covering underneath and the CBs covering behind them? Steve SD Blitz |

Steve SD Blitz Depending on asumed playtype and formation, but basically it is kind of the same stage in the defense grid on pass plays, yes.... |
