This thread is for general discussion of playbook theory and how it pertains to your team. This can include anything like sharing a particular play you find especially effective. This is meant to help others who wouldn't normally have a good playbook besides the default one offered. That doesn't mean you have to divulge your entire scheme. Consider it a brainstorming exercise.

Other helpful information includes what type of players ran the play and how often it happens etc.

cheers

What i find handy is changing plays towards the end of quarters. If you used shotgun 2WR pass, then inside 4mins use the same formation to rush. The Defense should expect pass as it was before so you catch them in the wrong stances.

I recently added this play to my book:

Q:any,Down:4,to go:2-3,distance to GL:<40,score:behind,clock:any,formation:big-I,play type:rush,in all directions.

I'm hoping this will help my players be more aggressive if falling behind. I notice the default playbook leans towards really whacky punt attempts that are often inappropriate under certain conditions. I also bumped a "Rush on 4th with 1 to go" above all my field goal options.

I'm not exactly a tactical genius when it comes to football tactics but I'm hoping this doesn't completely screw up my playbook.

Playbook is one of my weak areas, so any advice should be taken with a grain of salt.

scottishbronco's suggestion to try and confuse your opponents about your tendencies is a good idea.

Certainly you should test some of these changes in meaningless games, if possible.

A lot of teams have poor punting or FG kicking rules. For instance, if your punter averages 30 yards, don't punt inside your opponent's 30 yard line. Consider trying a FG or go on 4th down.

I was knocked out of last season's ChampofChamp cup when my opponent went for a TD on 4th and goal instead of a FG. So look at your rules for plays inside the 5 yard line.

Bear in mind that passing is a bit dangerous for most young clubs (you need a smart QB with 20+ passing, good receivers, and a decent OLine.)

Think direction when passing and running. Right, left, center, any? Sometimes one makes more sense than another.

Do you substitute in the 1st Qrtr or 1st half, or do you go with your starters for 15 or 30 minutes? If you do, you can look at plays that might take advantage of knowing which players are on the field during those periods, and tailor your 1st Qrtr/1st half playcalling. Once your backups start subbing in, there's no way to be sure your #1 WR is lining up on the left side.....

As you watch or review your games look for situations when your team or players do something you don't want to see happen ever again, and then make the change to your playbook:

-Did you go on 4th-and-1 on your side of the field? Get that out of your playbook!
-Are you getting beat with a 4-4-3 because you have no safety? Look at adding more formation options against that offense.
-Did your punter punt for a touchback? Maybe you can adjust your playbook so more of his punts land inside the 20, not in the end zone.

With defensive plays, what is a good play for blitz. How should blitzing be handled in general?

I only have one blitz in my defensive package, and it's never come up. Someone is going to have to start beating me with the pass before I worry about blitzing.

It might be worth a look if your scouting shows he's passing 100% in a certain formation? But unless you are getting beat by the pass, why give away a big play by taking someone out of coverage?

My game report shows my DEs and my opponent DEs breaking through the line regularly....which leads me to believe I don't need to blitz. If you are not seeing your DEs breaking through, and your opponents are beating you with the pass, then I'd think about it. But if your DEs are getting through, then they are giving you a pass rush already.

Just as example of using blitzing. I set 10% LB blitz in both Shotgun formations. Result: 8 pass plays - 1 blitz - 1 sack. (2 blitzes in rush plays)

That sounds like a good result. I gave no data of my own on blitz success/failure.

My expectation is that blitzing increases the chance for a big defensive play if it works, but it also increases the chance for a big offensive play when it fails.

The latter happened two me twice in one game and occasionally i see other games where such big plays happen due to the blitzung...that is why i use 0%
