Players get older, and eventually they retire. At the age of 30, players start to think about retiring, and it is the player’s decision if he stays for another season or not. Once he decides to retire there is nothing a manager can do, except to wish him well.
So there isn't any skill decline, there is just a X% chance that each year he wouldn't return? Is this true is you sign him to an extended contact? Steve SD Blitz |

You get a hint about when he will retire when you offer him a contract. He will only accept a contract with as many years he will have left before he retires.
Example: I have a 31 year old player who signed on to stay this season and 2 more. So I know I have him through 33 years old. I have a 30 year old player who would only accept a contract max length through next season. So I have him one more year. |

Is this true? Cause all my 29 (!) year old players accepted contracts only until the end of Season 4. I thought players in "a certain" age simply won't sign long term contracts. Without any hint of retirement.

From my experience, 29 year olds and older only sign 1 year contracts, but it doesn't mean they will retire anytime soon.

The other answers are right - older players will all only sign shorter contracts, and the contract length is not a clue to date of retirement. |
