Holy crap.
I was sorting through my roster and where I wanted to focus the draft. I came to 2 realizations. 1. We won't be able to afford of high skill players, at all. If I had a roster of 25 players at a skill of 30, 20 at skill 40, and 2 at a skill of 50 it would equal 76 million in salaries for the season. That is 47 players, consider you have probably 10 more players at least. You could have those 10 at 30 skill level fine. You wouldn't have much wiggle room. If I don't receive any money outside of stadium/sponsor money then with the above example I would have 8 million for the season to spend on those players outside of the 47. That isn't much. What if you want to buy a player on the TM? This realization led me to the second realization... 2. The talent level of player really does mean almost nothing. In the above example, only 2 players need a talent level over 2. That's right, only 2. A talent level of 2 yields a 41 skill level. I could only afford 20 of those in the above example. I think the skill level to talent level needs to be evaluated as talent carries little weight unless you want a superstar. BTW, you can only afford 7 superstars at skill of 50 with no other players on the roster. Damn. |

This is mostly true, but with contract mode, you can probably do better. If you're prudent about who and when you sign players to franchise contracts and when you extend other players longer term contracts, I think you could probably have a few more high skill players.
But yes, its not like you can have a whole team of 40+ skill players nor is high talent going to be very important in most cases. Steve SD Blitz |

Welcome to a management game.
There might be an issue with finances, I don't want to deny it, but it is intended to not having many superstars on the team. From the test stage I can say, that it is totally possible to have a full depth chart with players on the level of drafties or better. But ... not many in the 40+ region. But think about this: You can get in 10 seasons 30 Drafties and a few YA-Players also an draftie level. That's not enough to fill the whole roster. And yes, older teams will have problems with their transfer market buys, if the prices stay the way they are now. But someday you have to say goodby to some of your players, maybe you get a buck or two for them and can buy then a younger one? We will see. |

The only thing that surprises me about this thread is that it was started by Sfniner as you (Sfniner) were one of the first managers to realise that the 'holy grail' of 5* Talent trained to the max was almost certain to be unaffordable ....see your own thread Here
For quite some time now, in fact your original post may have been one of the catalysts for me thinking this way, Talent has dropped way down my list of "must-haves" ....almost to the point that it's now an irrelevance. I don't want to put words in other manager's mouths but I'm sure JonnyP posted yesterday to say that during his Draft deliberations Talent was almost a non-consideration for him too. I've got a very simple outlook on Talent ....a 0.5* Talent will train up to 36.5 in "trainable skills" .....if I could have a roster full of well-rounded/well-balanced players trained in the correct skills per position to 36.5 right now ....I would be more than happy. I'll leave the fortune-telling/predictions to Nostradamus, but I still think that the time to worry about "Talent limitations" will be 3/4/5 seasons down the line if ever, for me the bottom line is this ..... The Wages/Salaries will strangle you well before the Talent Caps ever do. I also take on board solana_steve's comment that contract mode helps, but I see it subtly different ... I see it that contract mode just delays the inevitable for a season or two. Not knocking Sfniner though ...great post, very thought provoking..... and jack6 is the balancing voice of Wisdom, as always |

You can't push every player to his maximum. I think I will train most starters to 40 and some to 45. With my saved money I can pay some players, who I never want to sell some extra money. With the contract mode you can give a player a 3 year contract at 40 and let him play 2 years at 45 with no wage increase. A player with a high talent you can push later to his maximum in his last year of his carrier, before he want to retire at the end of this season.

It probably goes beyond ... talent not being important. Given that talent impacts on wage - for the majority of your roster - its actually of negative benefit.
Probably better for a player to be 0.5 talent than 5 talent for a lot of your roster. |

I created my own future template based on skill level for my roster. I only need 2 players at a 5 talent level, qb and lb. Then I need 3 with a talent level of 3.5. The rest can be at a 2 talent or less, in fact only 12 need to be at a talent level of 2. So I only need 16 or 1/4 of my roster to even have a talent level of 2 or more! The majority of my roster needs only a half star of talent.
