Sorry Canonico - Liverpool have as much chance of winning the League as bwadders does of winning 'forum poster of the year 2012'!!

Did you know that since the Premiership started in 1991, Liverpool have had 1 second place finish as their best ever placing to date? One second place in what is now 22 seasons!!! I have no sympathy for that team, and laugh at anyone who still believes they are a big club. It is almost blasphemous that they have competed in the 'Champions' League, when they have been Champions of nothing for almost a generation. Fully echo the sentiments that the Champions League should be for Champions only!!!!

But money talks, and we move ever closer to the inevitable European breakaway league, where the top teams from each of the major footballing countries will form their own league. It will happen - dont doubt it - its just when - not if.

Robin van Persie completes his move to Manchester United whilst Manchester City get Jack Rodwell from Everton. Enough said there as to whom still holds the real pulling power for transfers. Still think United are short of a midfield maestro who can create chances and slip balls through for RVP and Shrek - i mean Rooney - but its still a great signing.

Meanwhile, my team, Derby County, go 4-1 up and then 5-3 up into injury time....but somehow manage to concede 2 to get it back to 5-5 as the ref finds 7 minutes of extra time....scoreless in O/T....and we lose 9-8 on penalties.....all to the mighty Scunthorpe in the first round of the Carling Cup. Gonna be (another) looooooooong season......

quite agree - it will be the death knell for many a smaller club and alot of smaller country leagues also. But football isnt about the proper supporter anymore - its all corporate and television and they dictate. The Champions League is already a bastardized (excuse the language) tournament and is just an indication of whats to come. They are not bothered how the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Inter, Juventus, Lyon etc get into the tournament - as long as they are in the tournament.

A Pure European League won't happen, this is why the Champions League is in its current format, Champions League is hard enough to win as it is, stick the top 16-20 teams in a league and make them play in a league format, so called big teams in their domestic league will become rather average and struggle to attract sponsors and fans alike. Sponsors and Fans love winners not mid table teams

A European League has been touted around for nigh on 20 years now, and its no closer to happening as it was back then

You're being an ostrich if you believe that.

20 years ago there wasnt the pure cash or transport infrastructure around that there is now - thats why in the 80's you had teams such as Malmo, Rapid Vienna, Anderlecht getting success in European tournaments - nowadays they are barely heard of - yet still around.

Fans - especially corporate - would rather see 'their team' play the likes of each other week in week out than they would (in England for example) the likes of Wigan, Stoke, Swansea or West Brom. The financial benefit from the TV rights, advertising, sponsorship and PR they would get from this would far outweigh the league position they eventually occupied - there may well be a 'second tier' of this league for some kind of relegation/promotion - but when you consider the likes of Newcastle, Man City have all been relegated from their own domestic league and have come back (stronger) without their fans deserting them, i dont know why youd think that being relegated from this ultra Division would be any worse.

Youre entitled to your opinion - but id wager a heavy amount that it will happen in the next decade or so.

The G14 (the top teams of Europe) disbanded after getting their way with regards to an extended Champions league format, whilst every now and then a Manager or club owner mentions the idea of a Euro League, its pretty much dead in the water

Incorrect mate there has been 2 second place finishes 2002 under Houllier and 2009 under Benitez.

I totally agree about the champions league should be for champions only. If they insist on having this extended format then why not put the cup competition winners in at least then you have to win something to qualify
