Mexico and New Mexico ...
I felt good, when the wall fell, I was 15 and it felt right. I'm still amazed by this peacefull revolution and I'm still glad that those in command (which spot of the command chain ever) did not say "shoot", or at least those soldiers, policemen and secret policemen never did. Thanks for that! Now, looking back, it was more like a takeover, than a unification and there are still a lot of issues to solve, like wage differences and all the other "special rules" once setup for that last step. Over 20 years now and still some people do think in east and west. And the 5 areas of the former GDR are still called the new ones. Germay was devided for 44 years. We are now back together for 22 years. I wonder how we will treat each other in 22 years ... Hopefully then the seperation is out of our heads also ... Regarding the date: For me the real celebration date should have been 9th of November, since that was the day the WALL fell (9th of November 1989). But because if this stupid Nazis burning synagoges and killing people at 9th of November 1938, this day will NEVER be a day for celebration. They have chosen the 3rd of October because of the official date of the unification. For me ... it's just a day off. |

In Germay it is names "Reichpogromnacht", since "Kristallnacht" does not sound like a mass-burning, mass-killing event, right. Wikipedia-Article of reichspogromnacht Because of this, the 9th of november is basically marked as "bad day" epecially in germany because of the nazis history. But it was not always a bad day. The first democratic republic of germany was also founded on 9th of november. Complicated date ... wikipedia-article of 9th of november in german history Last edited on 2012-10-04 07:40:09 by jack6 |

In fact the 9th of November is quite an important day in German history, but – as Jack said – not always a reason to celebrate. Edit: Seconds! Damn Last edited on 2012-10-04 07:40:51 by Sisko |

I think the confusion comes from the fact that both English names for these events have 'night' in them .... 'The Night of Broken Glass' (Kristallnacht) and 'The Night of the Long Knives' (Röhm-Putsch). |

'The Night of Broken Glass' (Kristallnacht) Wow "Broken glass" is much more convinient than Kristallnacht... @Jack: true...there are many differences in daily life between east and west, and still some stupid heads made of concrete (some politicians make it just worse with their stupid statements)...I guess this will solve itself once the generation changes...so another 22 years...sounds "right". |

Oh, and for myself the remarkable days are not 9th of November (Wall came down), or 18th of March (GDR government decided to join FRG), or the 1st of July (German Mark for all) or 3rd of October (official day for celebrating)
I think the most important time was just before 7th of October 1989, when people started leaving GDR via opened border in Hungary, Czech Republic and more. The time when locals went out for having sometimes peaceful demonstration for a better future (mostly not having a reunification in mind), sometimes even battling with the STASI and their helpers on the streets like in my hometown Dresden. Those were the days that were important |

True. I still get tears in my eyes, when I see all those people walking on the streets in the TV in documentations of that time shouting "Wir sind das Volk!" (we are the people!) If you want to see brave people ... there they are. EDIT: changed sense organ .... Last edited on 2012-10-04 09:34:25 by jack6 |
