It all depends but usually about 20-30 on both sides of the ball.

If I had to guess, I've got around 50 in offense and 30 or so in defense. But I would say about 15-20 of the offense plays are for clock management or overtime stuff.

From the manual, I know that with overlapping plays, the first slotted play is the only one run. So why all of these rules? I think I remember reading (and it stands to reason), that a more unpredictable offense is best, but wouldn't you only be able to run one type of play per time chunk, making all the rules repetitive? For example, I could see using different rules for quarter 1, 2, 3, and 4 to get the team to run either pass plays or run plays out of 4 different formations. But it isn't exactly deceptive to run only I-formation in the 1st, wishbone in the 2nd, etc. Or is it?

Hopefully this makes some sense, but as I am working on the playbook, I question my logic about play selection, and the best way to vary my play selection. I want to be able to on second down execute a run play or a pass play and have some deception without relying on the standard "prefer run or prefer pass option," and do so throughout the game rather than have a different strategy each quarter. Any comments? Thanks.

From my point of view:

in general I would divide offense playbook rules into 3 groups

Timemanagement (rushing at the end when leading/Passing when behind/two and or four minute drills/Fieldgoals when time runs out and 3 points will help you)

4th down orders (FG/PUNT/GO FOR IT depending on score/distance to goalline/Yards to go)

Gameplan rules

You would always want your offense to pick a play that is suited to the situation (down and distance/leading or behind)or use the element of surprise (passing in typical run situations)

The most effective way to score big plays (or at least most gain per play) on even teams with proper Defensive settings is outsmart the opponent by varying run and pass out of the same formation, so his defense will not be able to adjust.
As most of the successful managers also scout their opponents (more or less extensively) and adjust their defense playbook accordingly the more complex a playbook gets the harder it is to figure it out for them

so the goal for the typical offense playbook is bring in some variety to situations so opponents can not know that you e.g always use shogun 4wr pass on first down. Possibilities to vary your playcalling are selecting different plays for leading/behind, Quarter, Distance to goalline, time

The best way of becoming unpredictable is of course having different playbooks that use formations differently and use different plays in situations and simply switch through the playbooks while choosing the one fitting your opponent the best.

Hope this will help you a bit

Everyone is hijacking my thread ...

but I have another question. In my playbook I had a last 4 minutes rule, ie if its the last 4 minutes of the Q4 and we are winning then we run the ball to run the clock down.

Anyways in my game today, I was winning 17-10 in Q4 but for some reason we ran the ball on every play (other than punting). 9 straight runs before the last 4 minutes which seems too many to be a co-incidence.

Using the check playbook feature ... stuck in 50 yards, 10 mins Q4 we lead 17-10 and it said no rule which means it should resort to game settings which would be run and pass for Q4

Anyone any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong ?

Well, assuming the formations were the ones on the GS, then that's just the way the cookie crumbled in that situation.

The "run and pass" setting can get moronic in 1 direction at times but again, just the way the cookie crumbles.

Back to your original question, my take is this -

Whatever formation is set as preference for pass/run will get the call. There may or may not be some initial bias toward run/pass but the match engine prediction will dictate that after a few plays anyway.

If pass was set on D and the O ran 3 times straight then the D switches to it's run option. I'm not sure if it stays like that (i.e. that the D only swaps if 3 runs in a row occur after the first few plays or whether there's some sort of %)

If you have a D set to run and the other team runs a lot, then your D will continue to play the run better and better up until some sort of max. I'm pretty sure it's not at that max to start with. And then you'd better hope they don't throw a pass in!
