Can't believe I stayed in it until the 4th quarter! I knew it couldn't hold up. lol. Although statistically it shouldn't have been close lol. An int, 2 missed field goals, and a missed xp killed me.

Good job SF! I had a missed FG too.

You did stack up the passing yards BUT seriously I do have a really strong pass D.

Post Game Review Week 2

I have 5 games that were close ones and I'm posting right away because I'm personally motivated after watching my game unfold.

Polar Bears 21 Rio 20

Dang this was a close one! The Bears did contain the Rio run game and really the Rio pass defense held up except three plays. Those three plays were td passes of 54, 82, and 67 yards each. Those three passes represent all of the Bears points and almost half of their total yardage (more than half of their passing yardage). Taking out those three plays Rio held them to under 5 per pass attempt. Alas those three plays is all it takes for the Bears to pull this out! The final 25 minutes of the game so no scores at all. A punt fest with a missed field goal mixed in.

Seahawks 31 Janitors 24

Seahawks dominated time of possession 65-35 and number of first downs 33-8 and other categories as well. What kept the Janitors in it was the big play, 4 of them in fact. The Janitors picked the Seahawks off twice in Seahawk territory that got them a TD and a field goal. 14 of the other points came from 2 passes of 80 and 97 yards, representing 177 of their 249 yards passing. They nearly pulled off the same thing as Polar Bears in their match.

Jackalopes 22 SF 18

There is a pattern emerging this week, the big play! The Bears used 3 big plays to win it, the Janitors had 4 to almost win to overcome an otherwise dominating performance by the Seahawks.

This is much the same. Mind you before the game I didn't expect to win this. However when I watched it and saw the final numbers...it felt a little messed up lol.

TOP 62% SF to 38% Jackalopes. First downs 32 SF 10 Jackalopes. 501 yards SF 265 Jackalopes. 3rd downs 7/11 SF 1/11 Jackalopes.

Going into the 4th quarter I had a slim lead despite a safety and an int that turned into a TD for jackalopes. Then in one heave the Jackalopes got over half their passing yards with one 80 yard touchdown, taking the lead and keeping it. In the end I just couldn't punch through when in the red zone. 3 trips in the second half netted me 6 points with 2 field goals and missed field goal. At least I know I'm not as far back as I thought I might be. Still trying to avoid relegation.

Panthers 36 Westlake Marines 30 in overtime!

Marines must have felt amazing with less than a minute to go and holding on to 30 to 23 lead and getting the ball back. Who wouldn't? On 3rd and 9 on their own 19 the worst possible scenario happend. A pick six by the panthers ties the game up! Insanity! In overtime the Marines got the ball first but stalled out. The Panthers then took the ball and marched in chunks of 5 to 9 yards each while not facing a single 3rd down to score a td to win it!

Turigtian revenge over St. Pauli

In a rematch of the D2 championship the final outcome was reversed. In the champoinship game St. Pauli won handily. This time around it was Turigtians with the victory. It comes down to how many interceptions St. Pauli throws in a game. In the championship it was only 2 but today he threw 5 which was just too much to overcome.

Week 3 Previews

I know it is only 1 day but it feels like a world of difference when it is 3 days between league games and 4 days. lol.

Baltic Stars @ Girona Dragons

These two teams have played each other 6 times in the last 4 seasons and it seems to be a ping pong match. They have literally been alternating wins back and forth. By that pattern Baltic should win. However 4 or the 6 victories has been by the home team.

Baltic is coming off of a 13 point loss to the Devils. They came back down to earth after beating the Hell out of me the first week. Perhaps it is appropriate the Devils beat them then?

Meanwhile Girona is coming off a win where they whipped up on the Wuppertalers by 25 points. Their defense seems pretty good against the run while the passing defense is still working out the kinks. Unfortunately for these Dragons the Stars focus on...well...passing. If Girona can't shore up the pass defense then the Stars are favored to win.

Budapest Wolves @ Wolves

I feel the Wolves will win this one. Which wolves? Well that brings me to a question, why do we have so many wolves in this league? In fact you could almost make a game out of the team names in this league like the Kevin Bacon game. Budapest Janitors, Budapest Wolves, Wolves, Werewolves, Mulheim Steelers, Mulheim Seahawks, lol.

In any case a loss here by the Budapest Wolves could continue a spiral down (like most of us D2 promoted teams) where we are trying to survive. A win here though....keeps them afloat and one step further from the race to relegation. lol. Budapest has a decent defense but it needs to step up to keep those other Wolves from running away from the pack! They are the number 1 rushing team at the moment.

Gardians @ Rio

Did Rio piss off Pete? lol. This is a murderous stretch of 3 games to start the season. Against upper league teams they lost both games by one score each. Heartbreaking losses. They really need to rebound vs Gardians so they don't fall to 0-3! Rio's first 3 teams had a combined record of 35-13 last season. 2 won their division and the 3rd they play next was the runner up in Rio's division.

I'm picking Rio but these teams have split their games the last 2 seasons and each game was 10 points or less in difference in score.

Jackalopes @ Westlakes Marines

The Marines have been subjected to the same fate as Rio so far, a tough first 3 games of the season. Losing the first two is tough. What is their reward? Facing a team they have lost 4 in a row to. Actually the current manager of Westlake has never beaten the Jackalopes. If the Jackalopes play like they did vs me then this will be the Marines first win vs them. If Jackalopes play better like they did vs Steelers then it will be a touch match indeed.

I'm leaning on Westlake to punch through for their first win of the season and the first win vs their nemesis.

2-0 Quack Attack vs 2-0 Steelers

A battle of unbeaten teams! Would be a lot cooler to say if wasn't just the 3rd week lol. What amazes me is these two managers have been here a while (Quack Attack since season 10 and Steelers since season 28) and have only faced each other 5 times despite being in Dragons together. In fact of those 5 only one has been in the last 6 seasons and it was a supercup match. Boggles the mind a little.

To the game itself....

Quack Attack isn't a bad team that is just lucky to be 2-0. Yes, last season they finish 6-10 but they also played in the strongest division in the league (in my opinion). They lost the last 7 games but it was 2 to ergodicity, 2 to jackalopes, 1 to Westlake, and 1 to Wolves. Brutal finish to the season.

That being said I expect Steelers to run the ball against the Quack Attack and claim the win.

Post Game Week 3

Well of all the games I picked to preview only one was within 10 points.

Wolves 40 Budapest Wolves 20

Budapest started off hot outscoring the wolves 17-0 in the first quarter. They had 2 long drives and an int return for a td. After that it was all Wolves and the Budapest kind. Of the Budapest total yardage production, half of it was in the 1st quarter. They were shut down after that.

Gardians 40 Rio 20

Rio was in this game in the second quarter kicking a field goal to get to 13-14. The rest of the 2nd quarter sunk Rio. 3 drives for the Atoms that were 4 plays 31 yards and an int, 4 plays 7 yards punt, 4 plays 2 yards punt. Gardians 3 drives in the 2nd quarter they got an int off of Atoms and turned it into a td, a 10 play drive for a td, and a 4 play drive for a field goal.

After half time it was 31-13. Both teams combined or 15 total points in the second half. So it really was that second quarter (the int seemed to start it off) that decided the game.

Jackalopes 27 Westlake 17

Nothing specific to report as both teams performed fine with no turnovers of consequence. Statistically the game was close. Jackalopes had the lead and Westlake could keep with striking distance but just couldn't catch up.

Steelers 55 Quack 24

The first play of the game told you all you need to know about how the Quack Attacks day would go. First play is a 98 yard kickoff return for a td for the Steelers. I don't see that happen often. Steelers were running on all cylinders without any hiccups at all. Brutal big play smackdown was put on.

3 Close games in Week 3

Moors 24 Seahawks 23

The Seahawks went into the 4th quarter with a 20-10 lead. Both teams combined for 7 drives of 10+ plays, a drive of 9 plays, and a drive of 8 plays. Great football on offense. Honestly the Seahawks seem to be in control going into the fourth quarter.

The Moors scored a td off a long drive in the 4th quarter followed by a long drive by the Seahawks for a field goal to bring the score to 23-17 favoring the Seahawks. Then with 6 minutes to go the Seahawks get the ball back on their 24 yard line. One play and it is an interception returned 18 yards by the Moors and eventually a touchdown. The Seahawks get the ball back and with 3:29 left they get a 3rd and 1 on their own 45. They punt it and never get the ball back. I wonder if they make a change in the playbook for this scenario in the future?

OTR 13 Nuthuggers 12

You like a low scoring game where the kicker matters? This is the one for you. Nuthuggers had 3 down on the opp 10 twice, the 20 twice, and on the OTR side of the field at least 2 other times. They just couldn't punch through and that is what cost them the game.

Budapest Janitors 28 Torpedoed 27

How comfortable would you feel going into half time up 24-0? I imagine that the Torpedoes also felt comfortable with that lead. They even start off the 3rd quarter with a 10 play drive eating up 4 minutes of clock time and get a field goal to extend the lead to 27-0.

Then the Janitors used the big play to get back into the game with touchdown passes of 77 yards, 75 yards, 58 yards, and 35 yards. Just 4 flicks of the wrist and the many long drives and ball control of the Torpedoes is wiped away. I honestly feel for the Torpedoes in this one. They had opportunities in the second half with 6 drives that were punts and no drive being more than 33 yards. I imagine they will go to the playbook to see why the highly efficient 1st half offense dried up in the second half.

Week 4 Previews

The theme this week is there are 4 games where an undefeated team is going into the stadium of a team that is 2-1.

3-0 Lonester @ 2-1 Paladins

These teams are very familiar with each other as divisional foes. The last 10 games they faced each other went like this: Lonestar crushing Paladins 4 games in a row. Paladins crush Lonestar. The last 5 have been close matches with Paladins winning 3 of the 5. It seems Paladins have caught up over time and have figured somethings out.

That being said Lonestar seems to be on cruise control easily dispatching the Marines, Bears, and 49ers. They are averaging over 575 yard of offense a game, ranking them as 2nd overall. On defense they haven't gotten a lot of turnovers but they have shut the passing games down (#6 overall passing yards allowed)

The season is trending that Lonestar should cruise through but historically (up to last season) it should be a tight game. A win by Lonestar should give an early edge for the division. Leaning towards Lonestar for the win.

2-1 Moraira Moors @ 2-1 Baltic Stars

These teams have not played each other yet. This is a matchup of the # 8 and #9 ranked teams in the latest power rankings. I'm using this information since there isn't any history.

Both teams are highly ranked offensively with the Stars #1 in passing (400 yards a game). With that passing comes more interceptions, naturally. They are the 3rd highest in interceptions thrown, averaging 2.3 per game. They only average 96 yards rushing per game. Kind of an all or nothing.

The Moors are more balanced averaging 330 yards passing (#5) and 160 yards rushing (#6) per game. They don't turn it over often either.

This game will come down to the better defenses. Both teams are fairly the same on passing defense. Vs the rush the Stars are in the middle of the pack allowing 112 yards a game.

Moors win if they weather the big plays and control the clock.

3-0 Wolves @ 2-1 Seahawks

A match up of the #1 and #3 ranked teams in the power rankings. I don't have a lot to say about this game as I expect the Seahawks to win this by double digits despite facing the #1 ranked team. Wolves have faced 2 of the recently promoted teams and the Torpedoes. No disrespect intended for the Wolves opponents thus far but it is not the strongest stretch of 3 games a team has had. I think Wolves come back down to earth with a loss to the Seahawks. Believe me I'd rather a Wolves win against my divisional foe. I mean the Seahawks are 2-1 and their loss was a super late INT to the Moors.

3-0 OTR @ 2-1 St. Pauli Packers

#7 ranked OTR vs #12 St. Pauli. Kind of feel this is similar to the above game. St. Pauli has had a much easier schedule. So far they faced 2 other teams they promoted with and went 1-1 in those games and then beat the 0-3 Vipers. Whereas the OTR beat a good Gardians team and other established D1 teams. St. Pauli also comes down to earth.

3-0 Panthers @ 2-1 Jackalopes

Panthers have won 6 of the last 10 games vs Jackalopes. Some games have been tight with others blowouts. The common opponent they have played is Westlake where Jackalopes beat them 27-17 and Panthers beat them 36-30.

Statistically Panthers have been better this season. Jackalopes have the #23 offense and #26 defense while Panthers are #6 offense and #2 defense. What has kept Jackalopes going is the lack of turnovers, as in they don't turn it over much at all this season so far. Panthers have gotten several turnovers off their opponents. I feel this game will hinge on wether Jackalopes continue their ability to not turn it over. If Panthers pry a few off of them then it could go south quickly on Jackalopes.
