I would like to suggest you to indicate the "champions list" after each period analyzed.

Thank you for the suggestion, but please elaborate: Do you mean a list of each champion from each conference on D1 level in each region, to have an overview of the teams coming into the Elite each season? Or just a list of each division champ in the Elite?

Sorry. I meant the list of Elite champions updated season by season (starting from S14) while you analyze NC West.

I maybe had a bit too much fun to do this today, so we continue our brief history examination of the NC West in the Elite league right away with a look at the Seasons 20–29:

In S20 the Underachieving Steamrollers honored their name fully and, after winning the division 5 times in a row, only managed to win 4 games and finished last in the West. It was won by the Memphis Bees instead with a record of 7–9, which left every team in the division with a losing record. They did have quite an impressive playoff game, but lost by 1 point to a team from the NC North.

After 4 seasons being second in the division at seasons end the Fighters de Paris won it twice in S21 and S22, each time with 11 wins. But they also lost both times in the postseason to teams from the NC East in the Wildcard round.

In S23 the Palermo Eagles rejoined the Elite and won the division in this and the ensuing season. S23 also had the Underachieving Steamrollers returning, who finished second behind the Eagles that season, but had to leave again in S24.

In S25 the Gardians, just coming into the Elite for the first time, won the division with a record of 8–8, the Palermo Eagles finishing second with the same record. Both teams left the league again after S26, in which Artifice won the West and the Fighters de Paris returned to finish second. The latter won the division in S27, with another team from the French capital, Ici c’est Paris, being second. No team in this 3 season span was successful in the postseason, though, as they all lost their games in the Wildcard round… and it was never really close.

That was about to change in S28, when the Chelt Nam Bobbers were promoted to the Elite after 5 playoff runs in the Dragons league prior to that. And they immediately made their mark on the biggest stage: In their first season the finished as the #3 seed and won their first playoff game. In S29 they even made it to seed #1, but lost in the divisional round to the #5 seed from the NC East.

But these two seasons were a sign of what was about to come, since they started the longest streak of a team to win the division with this. But that’s for next time to dive into.

What really stands out in these 10 seasons is the constant churning of many different teams to join the division. Besides the aforementioned teams part of the NC West in the seasons 20–29 were the Buffalo Bills, the Cincinnati Spartans, the Unseen University Wizards, Modest Mouse, the Juggernaut Jackalopes, the Paris Hurricane and the Brasilia Muscles. Most teams never made it for more than two seasons, with the second usually being a losing one. Some even only were Elite for one season before returning to the Dragons region.

Maybe therein lies a first hint of why there was no title for the Dragons division until now?

Meanwhile the Elite Bowl games played in these 10 season were the following:

S20 - Landru Athletics (AC East) 34:41 michigan state spartans (NC East)
S21 - Wilmersdorf Wadenbeisser (AC North) 27:37 San Diego Blitzkrieg (NC South)
S22 - San Diego Blitzkrieg (NC South) 21:20 Carrickfergus Knights (AC West)
S23 - Stone Mountain Hawks (AC South) 7:25 San Diego Blitzkrieg (NC South)
S24 - Black Dragons (NC North) 19:24 Wilmersdorf Wadenbeisser (AC North)
S25 - Styrian Bears (AC East) 43:6 Black Dragons (NC North)
S26 - Landru Athletics (AC East) 13:37 michigan state spartans (NC East)
S27 - michigan state spartans (NC East) 21:35 Styrian Bears (AC East)
S28 - michigan state spartans (NC East) 10:45 Wilmersdorf Wadenbeisser (AC North)
S29 - OrangeCrush (NC South) 13:20 Wilmersdorf Wadenbeisser (AC North)

Overall record between the conferences at this point: AC 10 – NC 6

And about the Fighters de Paris, who were one of the few recurring teams in the NC West: They left the Elite in S29 to never return. They did have some seasons with playoff appearances in the Dragons league afterwards, but never got over the hump again. After one final push in S37 they went 6–10 and 0–16 in the ensuing seasons, were relegated down to D2 level and went out of business in S40. But not for long, as one popopotamo almost immediately picked up what was left of the team, relocated and renamed and soon became a household name of the Dragons league with it.

We continue our brief examination of the NC West of the Elite league throughout its history and take a look at the Seasons 30–39:

And with this we enter fully the Era of the Biggest Dragon. From S30 to S33 the Chelt Nam Bobbers dominated the division, always achieving records of at least 10 wins and pulling off two seasons, S30 and S32, in which they got to the conference championship game of the NC that they both times lost against a team from the NC South. S32 even had a second team from the NC West in the postseason, the Underachieving Steamrollers, but it was a game between both West teams in the Wildcard Round that the Steamrollers lost 10:18.

In S33 Thunder and Lightning joined the NC West and, after finishing second in their first season, even took the division from the Bobbers in S34, with the latter being second just one win behind. But the Bobbers came back and won the West again in S35, while Thunder and Lightning mustered only 4 wins and thus was relegated back to the Dragons region.

The Bobbers started their second division-winning-streak with this and, after losing their Wildcard round games in S35, S36 and S37, had another run to the championship game in S38, which they lost to a NC North team. In S39 they made it to the Divisional round, but lost to the same NC North team again.

The constant churning of teams behind the Bobbers continued in this span of seasons. In 6 out of 10 seasons the second team in the NC West was a different one. Only the Steamrollers, Thunder and Lightning and Erudite Linstock were able to secure consecutive stays in the Elite. 3rd and 4th place, though, were almost always different teams, and its an illustrious list: Artifice, Panthers, Juggernaut Jackalopes, Werewolves, Palermo Eagles, BlackLivesMatter, Tampa Bay Bandits, LoneStar Armadillos and BSoD came and went. Some came back, but went back to the Dragons league after just one season.

Maybe the reason for this lies in the fact that the Dragons league, at least when we joined in S52, was one of the strongest leagues at the D1 level of RZA. That could explain why there were no few dominant teams that battled for a place in the Elite, but many each season… and when they finally got there, each and every one was overwhelmed by the challenges that the Elite poses. But of course that’s only wild guessing since we weren’t there at that time.

The Elite Bowl games of this time period were the following:

S30 - Styrian Bears (AC East) 34:13 OrangeCrush (NC South)
S31 - Barmbek Cutbacks (NC East) 0:37 Wilmersdorf Wadenbeisser (AC North)
S32 - Wilmersdorf Wadenbeisser (AC North) 49:3 OrangeCrush (NC South)
S33 - OrangeCrush (NC South) 24:14 Wilmersdorf Wadenbeisser (AC North)
S34 - OrangeCrush (NC South) 21:23 Wilmersdorf Wadenbeisser (AC North)
S35 - OrangeCrush (NC South) 33:14 Yellowcakes (AC West)
S36 - OrangeCrush (NC South) 28:23 Wilmersdorf Wadenbeisser (AC North)
S37 - Helsinki Gangsters (AC South) 19:17 OrangeCrush (NC South)
S38 - Wilmersdorf Wadenbeisser (AC North) 22:16 Salt City Pirates (NC North)
S39 - Salt City Pirates (NC North) 22:16 Helsinki Gangsters (AC South)

Overall record between the conferences after S39: AC 16 – NC 10

About the Underachieving Steamrollers, who were the second team to win the Elite NC West and came back to play another postseason game in S32: After relegation in S33 they had some seasons still in which they played the postseason in the Dragons league, but failed each time against the team that subsequently would go on to win their conference. In S40 they avoided relegation after a 4–12 season, but still went 0–16 in the following. And in S42, after a lengthy run that began in S5, the operation was closed for good.

Nice write up.

What's missing and maybe to much to ask for is, 'why?'.

You do list all the playoff teams and who won at the end, but the 'why?' on why did those team, even the big bad division winners, not succeed in the playoffs to win it all?

I think that is hard to answer. From the reading of the summary it seems the teams did face many time the wrong team at the wrong time, but if you want to be champ, you have to win those games, no matter what.

And 'why?' it was not enough at that moment, will always be a mystery.

Man, it is a mystery to me since season 1, why my team does lose certain games.

I'll try to dive into the "why" aspect later on. For starters I just wanted to give you (and me) an overview of what happened, some background information before going into the numbers.

To be honest, some thoughts about the "why" do come to me only while writing this stuff out, which helps me a lot getting ideas straight in the process. And since I write these texts anyway, sharing them with you was quite obvious to me
