HAMBURG SEA LIONS Turn Supercup Playoff Into a Wonder Comics Blockbuster

At Hammer Sports Park, with 138762 visitors packed in and Wonder Comics sponsoring the day under the banner “The greatest heroes are made by Wonder,” the experts had predicted a close Supercup Playoffs match between HAMBURG SEA LIONS and Suchdol Minors. What they received instead was a roaring mechanical lion with a jet engine strapped to its mane.

HAMBURG SEA LIONS began like a grand tourer launching off a runway. Bryant Stover guided the opening drive with calm menace, spreading passes to Ernest Pastorek, Dau Ngige and the tight ends before Andreas Danielsson finished the march with a short rushing touchdown. Emir Pouget added the kick, and the home side had set the tone without asking permission.

Suchdol Minors tried to answer through Elias Björnsson and quick throws to Pavel Skorepa and Ondrej Trešnák, but the Hamburg defense arrived repeatedly like a piano falling from a crane. Dudi Levi produced an early sack, and the Minors were forced into punts while Tommie Matlock kept giving Hamburg useful return position.

The Sea Lions then assembled another rumbling drive, mixing Bryant Stover’s precision with Ferdi Ludwig’s and Rafał Migoś’s power running. Migoś drove in for a rushing touchdown, Pouget again supplied the kick, and the Hamburg machine was purring with the subtlety of a volcano.

In the second quarter, Hamburg kept leaning on the ground game. Ferdi Ludwig powered through from close range for another rushing touchdown after a drive full of first-down grinding and clean blocking. The Sea Lions’ offensive line looked less like a wall and more like a moving continent.

To their credit, Suchdol Minors refused to curl up in a decorative basket. After Samir Miljanic sacked Björnsson, the away side recovered with a determined march featuring Vasil Brzobohatý, Oldrich Klein and Petr Stejskal. Oldrich Klein capped it by catching a touchdown pass from Björnsson, with Maxmilián Janík adding the kick. It was the Minors’ best sequence: composed, clever, and briefly rather dangerous.

Hamburg nearly answered before halftime with another long drive, but Suchdol’s defense stiffened at the doorstep, with Aleš Javurek helping stuff Zdravko Keller near the line. The visitors needed that stand badly, because the second half was about to become a very loud Hamburg advertisement for forward motion.

After the break, the Sea Lions drained the field with a long, deliberate drive. Stover kept the chains moving, found Ernest Pastorek and Aarón Díez at key moments, and eventually hit Díez on fourth and goal for a touchdown catch. Pouget’s kick followed, and the home crowd sounded as if someone had dropped a comic-book meteor into the stadium.

Suchdol’s next series went nowhere, and Hamburg returned to the ground game like a chef returning to butter. Andreas Danielsson broke a strong run into opponent territory, and Zdravko Keller later finished the possession with a rushing touchdown. Along the way, the Minors’ defenders made tackles, certainly, but often after Hamburg had already taken precisely what it wanted.

The fourth quarter delivered the most outrageous theatre. Suchdol moved the ball with Björnsson finding Skorepa, Brzobohatý and Klein, but Ron Fischer smashed through for a sack to halt one promising push. Then Hamburg produced a spectacular thunderbolt: Stover found Ottokar Jäger on a 70-yard touchdown pass after Radek Panácek missed the tackle. It was less a football play and more a sports car overtaking a tractor on a mountain road.

Then came the turnover that turned the afternoon from defeat into demolition. Suchdol drove close behind runs and short passes, but Petr Stejskal fumbled near the Hamburg goal line. Cristóbal Hidalgo recovered it and thundered away for a 94-yard fumble return touchdown, brushing past missed tackles from Otta Burda, Elias Björnsson, Stejskal and Joshua MacDonald. It was a defensive score play of magnificent cruelty, the sort of moment that makes one sideline explode and the other stare at the turf as if it had insulted their family.

Suchdol Minors still found one last scoring moment when Maxmilián Janík made a 45-yard field goal, and the visitors continued to compete with catches by Ondrej Trešnák, Pavel Skorepa and Oldrich Klein. But Hamburg closed the match by running the ball, consuming the remaining time, and looking very much like a team built for playoff winter and comic-book explosions.

The day also carried its share of bruises: Bernd Schwarz left and returned, Rafał Migoś was injured and came back, Paul Sontu did the same, Stevie Taylor also returned after treatment, while Štefan Hnízdil and Willi Jäger had injury scares. It was physical, grinding, and occasionally as elegant as a washing machine falling down stairs.

The final score was Suchdol Minors 10 - HAMBURG SEA LIONS 49.
