Champ of Champs Bowl Review: The Sea Lions Rob the Mountain

At Stone Mountain Stadium (SMS), with 144300 visitors packed in like associates at a back-room wedding, the Champ of Champs Bowl came sponsored by Duey, Cheatem and Howe - Attorneys above the law. The experts, those fancy suits with clean shoes, expected the home famiglia, Stone Mountain Hawks 2, to handle business. But HAMBURG SEA LIONS came into the house, kissed the ring, then stole the silverware.
The early action had both crews testing the turf. HAMBURG SEA LIONS opened with Bryant Stover working short passes, while Stone Mountain Hawks 2 answered through Luke Buck, Uwe Huber, Federico Cerutti, and Danny Klein. Then came the first real shakeup: Luke Buck tried to move the ball through the air, but Trey Skaggs stepped in front of it and returned the interception deep, like a button man cutting through an alley. HAMBURG SEA LIONS cashed that chance when Andreas Danielsson powered across the goal line, and Wenzel Mayer cleaned up the kick.
Stone Mountain Hawks 2 did not fold, capisce. Luke Buck guided a sharp answer, feeding Sadiki Dimka, Federico Cerutti, Alan Schröder, and Engelbert Schwarz before Danny Klein finished the march with a goal-line catch. Felipe Herrera handled the extra kick, and the home crowd had its noise back.
The second act belonged mostly to the Hawks. Their offense leaned on long, steady drives: Hans-Walter Klein and Cedomir Hadzievski punched at the front, while Luke Buck kept finding Danny Klein, Kamil Najjar, Sadiki Dimka, and Engelbert Schwarz. Danny Klein added another goal-line grab, and later Engelbert Schwarz finished a drive of his own. Felipe Herrera stayed cool on the follow-up kicks, like a consigliere counting envelopes.
But this game had knives on both sides. HAMBURG SEA LIONS threatened after strong work from Ferdi Ludwig, Andreas Danielsson, Dau Ngige, and Ernest Pastorek, only for Jim Willen to snatch a Bryant Stover pass and return it the other way. Earlier, Andreas Danielsson also put the ball on the ground, though he recovered his own fumble before the Hawks could claim it. Those moments kept the tension boiling.
After the break, Stone Mountain Hawks 2 struck again with a disciplined march. Luke Buck moved the chains through Federico Cerutti and Danny Klein, the running game softened the middle, and Cerutti finished with a catch in the end zone. Felipe Herrera added the kick, and it looked like the home team might be ready to close the books.
Not so fast, paisano. HAMBURG SEA LIONS started grinding back. Bryant Stover spread the ball around to Aarón Díez, Dau Ngige, Paul Sontu, Ernest Pastorek, and Allen Gallagher, while Ferdi Ludwig and Burt Cantwell hammered the ground game. Ferdi Ludwig finished one drive near the goal line, then later crossed again early in the final stretch. Wenzel Mayer stayed automatic on his kicks, and the Sea Lions began to make the stadium feel very, very nervous.
The biggest swing came when Luke Buck looked outside for Federico Cerutti, but Istvan Otto jumped the route and returned the interception into dangerous territory. HAMBURG SEA LIONS wasted no time, with Dau Ngige turning a short throw into an end-zone strike. Later, Burt Cantwell finished another punishing drive at the goal line, with the Sea Lions’ blockers doing the kind of dirty work that never makes the family portrait but wins the turf war.
Stone Mountain Hawks 2 still had one last business meeting. Luke Buck moved the ball with completions to Danny Klein, Federico Cerutti, and Arnim Baumann, while Waran Takai helped on the ground. The drive stalled close enough for Felipe Herrera to drill a late field goal. The Hawks then forced a punt and got one final desperate shot, with Danny Klein making a catch near midfield, but the clock gave them the cold shoulder.
There were bruises in this brawl too: Chris Dymohor, Costantino Lombard, Hassan Kalil, Aarón Díez, Allen Gallagher, Modesto Kirkpatrick, and Sameh Qasim all appeared in the injury notes at different moments, with several returning to the action. This was not ballet, this was business.
Final score: HAMBURG SEA LIONS 35 - Stone Mountain Hawks 2 31.
