What a game in Hamburg! The SEA LIONS started the game with two HUGE plays by the defense: first they picked the QB of the Fredericksburg Comanches, then recovered a fumble on the first play of the opponents next drive. Both turnovers resulted in touchdowns. These were answered by the Comanches, but the SEA LIONS kept fighting and in the end scored two field goals more than the visitor to win 34:28. Wow!
And since Melittlemenon thepitchhitchin did indeed get their revenge against the Glastonbury Grail Knights all the teams in Group 3 are 1–1 and whoever wins on Game Day 3 advances to the KO round. Again: Wow! |

It’s the third Sunday of 2023, and that means Game Day 3 of the NEW YEAR’S FRENZY-Friendly Cup is ON!
All the teams still can, although a few only very theoretically, advance to the next stage, so we’ll have an exciting last game day of the group round with the following match-ups: At 1200, again kick-starting the games in the earliest spot, the Constanta Ravens welcome the Guardians. The Ravens must win and hope that Fighting Frankonian beat the Ruhrpott Miners at 1700. If the Ravens lose and the Miners lose, too, it comes down to PDR, and there the Miners sit quite comfortable on second place with a positive difference while the Ravens and Frankonian both have to make up at least 5 TDs to jump them. Both games of group 1 are again played at 1800. The Bretzfeld Bandits visit the Fargo Knights, while the Social Distance Runners go to The Parking Lot, home of the Lincoln Towncars. The Bandits have a very slim chance to still get in the KO-round, but they would have to win against the Knights and do so with a big margin to make up at least 4 TDs. And the Social Distance Runners would have to lose, too. If the Runners want to advance they would have to win and either hope that the Knights lose or that they make up the one TD that the Knights are better than them. At 1900 Hell A Rams visit the Deimon Devil Bats and would have to win to surely advance to the KO-round. In the second game of group 2 the Morgantown Mad Dogs match up with group-leader Alaskan Fur Traders at 2100 and need to defend The Dog Pen while making up at least 3 points to jump the Rams. And finally at 2100 both games in group 3 are played: The Fredericksburg Comanches go to the Glastonbury Grail Knights while Melittlemenon thepitchhitchin visit the HAMBURG SEA LIONS. Since all the teams are 1–1 that means whoever wins goes on to the next round, whoever loses is out. In this group the KO-round begins one game day earlier, so to say

And with the final whistle at 2200 the group round is behind us.
Besides Group 3, where all participants just needed a win to advance, the teams that were first and second of their respective groups coming into Day 3 were able to defend their place. Now, since only half of the teams can advance to the KO round we sadly say „farewell and thank you for participating“ to Radu91s Constanta Ravens, the Fighting Frankonian udotrebes, the Social Distance Runners by Buziano, Kottans Bretzfeld Bandits, the Deimon Devil Bats by Mcbutcher, ombi78s Morgantown Mad Dogs, the Glastonbury Grail Knights by ArthurPendragon and Melittlemenon thepitchhitchin by lions1934.

A little late today, because life, but nonetheless:
It’s Playoffs-Time in the NEW YEAR’S FRENZY-Friendly Cup. Half the teams, twice the intensity, all the more fun. And these are the match-ups for todays games: Opening the tournament at 1200 the 3–0 Guardians went to the Fighting Tomahawk, home of the Comanches of Fredericksburg. The opponents know each other since they both play in the same league. And they already met this season in week 8 when the Guardians won on their own home field 29:27, coming back from a 27:6 deficit at halftime by forcing 3 turnovers in the forth quarter. Today they led at half time 14:9, but then the Comanches prevented them from scoring more than one FG while themselves scoring two touchdowns, winning 23:17 and advancing to the semi finals of the cup. At 1800 the Alaskan Fur Traders visit the Fargo Knights. The Fur Traders are still unbeaten in official games in 2023 while the Knights struggle in to find their footing in their second stint at the Elite Level. Morale is still high in Fargo, though, so it will be quite the test for the Fur Traders in the Roller Dome. In the second game at 1800 the Lincoln Towncars welcome the Hell A Rams. 2023 has been successful so far for the Rams, with only one loss in the league this year. And although it will be a challenge at the Parking Lot the chances for the visiting team may be not so slim since the Towncars seem to struggle in the past weeks, being 1–5 in the league since the turn of the year. And in the last game of the day at 2100 the Ruhrpott Miners go to the HAMBURG SEA LIONS. In the only game where both teams lost one in the group round the Miners challenge a team that had, until yesterday, not taken an L in the league this year. And the SEA LIONS are already in KO-round-mode since they had to win their last game to advance to the playoffs. They had a unwelcome hit to their morale in the league, though, and the Miners have an at least even record in all aspects of the current season, so it would be a surprise if these two opponents do not meet at eye-level. And again we have to sadly say „farewell and thanks for participating“, this time to the Guardians by Uaschitschun, 4 Aces’ Alaskan Fur Traders, Hell A Rams by MrETees and the Ruhrpott Miners by torakrid. In other news: The organizing staff of the SEA LIONS has been put on notice for proclaiming that the final game of the NEW YEAR'S FRENZY-Friendly Cup will be played on Superbowl Sunday. Somebody did not get that right, obviously, since we're already at the semifinal stage of the cup and the Superbowl will be played one week after our final. We are sorry and can just say that complaints and expressions of displeasure will be directly forwarded to the persons responsible  |

It’s the semifinals, and that we as the host of this friendly cup are still in the mix is an unreal experience. When I set the groups for the first round I did not imagine that we’d even advance beyond the group stage. But here we are, one of the last four, in a group of otherwise high-powered teams that will play the following games in the penultimate game-day of NEW YEAR’S FRENZY 22/23:
At 1800 the Fargo Knights visit the Lincoln Towncars for a re-match of the very first game-day on New Year’s Day. The teams already met twice this season, the other match being in the league, so this will be the third meeting. Will the Knights, who lost the first to match-ups, be able to stop the Towncars this time? At 1900 the HAMBURG SEA LIONS welcome the Fredericksburg Comanches to HAMMER SPORTS PARK, which, too, will be a re-match of a game played in the group stage of this cup. When they first met the SEA LIONS were able to upset the visiting favorite Comanches, beating them 34:28. Can they replicate this unlikely feat? Whatever happens: It will be an exciting football afternoon/evening/night |
